Root How to MANUALLY re-root after an OTA update

Very nice information on that page you linked, SA. My question remains, why are there so many references out there to using the three finger press which does, from the description, go into ABX mode. Should the description in post 1 be changed? A number of people in this thread have used it and never commented on this problem. Still

I'll have to look into what ABX mode is. Probably something I don't need to play with. I did notice that my computer would respond when plugged in in that state.

Looks like jhawkkw gave a little info about APX mode...:).

Also, I'm guessing / hoping Rxpert is following along here and will annotate his OP appropriately.

APX mode is a mode for NVFlash. You would only need to use this if you hard bricked your tablet from a bad flash. It would allow you to flash your bootloader back to the NVIDIA chipset directly or change/reset the partition map, similar to how JTAG'ing works. Except this is much less invasive because it's a simple tethered solution as opposed to opening the device up and soddering wires to specific nodes on the chipset. NVIDIA however has moved to make this propietary and has actually forced OEM's to send out updates that remove this feature from their Tegra devices.

That's a little over my pay grade. :D I think I'll leave ABX alone from now on.

By the way, probably, most people using this thread already knew how to boot into the bootloader/fastboot for their N7 since the topic is actually "Re-rooting." I'm just using it to root for the first time because the instructions seem so clear, so I hadn't done it before on my N7 :o (my previous experience with rooting and ROMing was my Nexus One).;)

I have an exam on Friday that's got me swamped right now. I've got a note for this weekend to go through this and update anything that you guys decide needs to be done. all suggestions are welcome

When this guide was written, you needed all 3 to get to boot loader. If that's changed, I'll gladly update :)

You da man, Rxpert! :)

Good luck on your test! :)

Well, I did it, but I ended up "cheating." Since I needed o unlock the bootloader as well as root for the first time, I went with WUGS, especially for the backup option. However, thanks to you guys, I know I can do it manually for the next update. Thanks to all who helped!

Well, that was cool. Both my Nexus 7 and Nexus 4 were hit with than minor 4.3 update. My N4 isn't rooted, so no problem there.

I didn't know what would happen with my rooted Nexus 7 but since I'm still in experiment mode I said "Sure, lets see what happens." The Tablet rebooted into recovery, which of course was TWRP, and it happily installed the update and then promptly told me that I had lost root, did I want to have it back again? I looked for the "Hell Yes" button but settled for the "Slide to reroot" thingy. :) I then rebooted into system, it did the usual update "optimize apps" (which my guess is does nothing really) and all is well with the world. I was surprised that was handled so well (not having a lot of experience).

Is this typical, or is it because it was only a minor update? I'm thrilled of course. :D

Likely because it was such a minor update.

Sometimes the update will check for a few different things that people usually mess with (uninstalling bloat mainly) while rooted and the update won't install.

If you are only stock rooted and haven't uninstalled any system apps, it'll almost always go through.

In the "not-so-fast" department, the update didn't work. I must have just missed that message and it acted like it worked. With no obvious feature changes it was hard to tell, but I forgot to check the version number. It was still JWR66V.

I fixed it by using this very helpful post in the Nexus 4 forum here. Worked a treat! Now I have JWR66Y.

I love doing all this, how much you learn, and how really amazingly helpful (and patient) folks are here. If I brick, I brick, but as long as I let myself understand the logic first, I don't think I will. Having people providing such great instructions and passing on what they learn is really fantastic. Thanks to all!

Oh, and I sent money to WUGS. ;)
