[How-To] Manually Update Nexus One to Android 2.2 FRF91 (7/1/2010)

I re-read your question. I rooted to be able to install frf83 as my phone is an ATT.

That's frf83 (what I'm on now) to frf85b (which is the ATT specific frf85, I think.)


It makes sense that it's smaller, but not even a meg is tiny. It doesn't seem to install for me though.

Not sure if I care, the only complaint I have is the volume buttons can't be used to select ringer on, vibrate only, and no ring or vibrate......

I've been losing 3g a lot, but let's face it, I did root and install frf83 the day after the iphone 4 came out so that might be the cause.

I have a non-rooted Nexus One with regular 2.1-update1 firmware version and build ERE27. I have T-Mobile carrier.

I've done some searching on the web and these forums and got more confused regarding how to get the new 2.2 update. Also it seems like I am not running the latest build since I see build numbers that are newer than ERE27. (Anyone know of a FAQ to find out what all these numbers mean as a Nexus One / Android user: firmware version, build number, kernel?)

I have tried the checkin command and it tells me checkin successful. So how do I get the 2.2 update? I'm not sure I want to download and do it manually--basically because I don't know why I would have to do all that work to get the update when T-Mobile or Google should be throwing me a bone. :confused:
 
Well, I did the manual update as I'm impatient and I can say that it was worth it. You can wait longer if you want, either method is fine. As far as firmware, build, and kernel: firmware is the version of Android you are running i.e. 2.2, build varies (1.5 I believe had a build that said RC## I would assume means Release Candidate, the more recent ones such as FRF85B I would guess that the first letter is for the name (Cupcake, Donut, Eclair, Froyo) and the number beside it is the revisions. We had FRF50, 72, 83, and then 85B as Google was working out the final build of Froyo. Finally, the Kernel is the version of Linux on which the entire Android system is based. As it is updated, we get overall improvements to the OS. Hopefully, I'm correct on all of these.

Since installing the latest Froyo (FRF85B) build my phone is stalling alot and the Gmail application seems to have a role in this or at least is very affected by this. When the sync icon is on, the phone is very unresponsive. And not only while syncing.

Anybody has this problem ? Is there a Froyo update which wipes everything from the phone and installs the latest Froyo version ?

EDIT: Tried restarting the phone, tried wiping the Gmail app data...no luck. The phone is almost impossible to use :(

WTF...every Froyo version worked perfectly and this "final" one is the worst one ?

Easy to wipe the phone, 2 ways: One is the factory data reset in the settings under Privacy.

The other is to boot into recovery and use the 2 wipes in there.
 
Factory restore your phone, but use Astro to backup your apps and make sure you are fully sync'ed with your gmail account 1st. Worked for me when I had an issue with FRF72.
 
The OTA update is rolling out in waves. You'll get it this week probably. If you don't want to wait, there are threads on this forum that tell you how to do it manually.
 
Well if you don't want to do it manually, then wait. People have been waiting for the past month, since the I/O conference, and would rather have Froyo on their phones now than wait even longer.

Some carriers do make you install the update manually instead of OTA. So pick what you want really. The how to update Froyo manually is stickied a the top of the forum if you cannot wait any longer.
 
That makes sense. Can I load the default ATT 2.1 that is floating around on the forums, and then be able to load the epe4b to frf85b? I'll lose my settings and apps of course, but hopefully I should gain my 3g speeds back. They are pretty dismal now, especially the download speeds. The speeds are crazy slow, I got a 10k download speed just a minute ago, and it's rarely over 200 now.

I'm not sure that has anything at all to do with the bootloader.

So uh yeah, the more I think about it, the more I realize I'll have to get the default bootloader somehow. I used the XDA instructions that involve the ramonra(sp) file to be able to jump to frf83.

I would have wait, but google was not providing any kind of information at all about the update hitting ATT any time soon.

Sigh.


The money question is, how to get back to stock recovery. There is a post on XDA relating to that, but the instructions exist from before the ATT phone was even released.

In short, I'd like to undo what I did. Instructions on that seem to vary, all because there are two different versions of the phone.

8. Your phone will reboot, giving you a picture of the Android robot and an exclamation point inside a triangle.

9. Now press the power button and volume up button at the same time. It could take a couple of tries.

10. Now (using the trackball this time) choose "Apply sdcard:update.zip" and let things run their course.


i dont get these options.. after recovery i go into amon recovery screen ... no exlamation point.
 
On Step number 9, it's actually easier if you: Pressed the power button first(while you still have it pressed down) and then press the volume up button, it will work every time. Trying to push them at the same time does not work so well.

Im trying to update from 2.1 to 2.2 latest build .Im on EPE54B right now but im getting E:Can't open /sdcard/update.zip (bad) Installation aborted error.What could be the reason?
