Is there any way I can mix different elements from different themes; or can I customize themes?

Yes it can be done with ROMs and themes. I do it all the time. I use 7zip to replace images before I install the ROM or theme. Or if you've already installed it you can use ninja morph or metamorph from the market.

+1 i do it manually through 7 zip as well but thought ninja morph and metmorph would ease you into it but its all easy once you get the hang of it

In particular, I am trying to change the background of the Blur Contact Quick Task widget. The 928 blackglass theme changed the background to a translucent black glass that I liked a lot (although it wouldn't work for all sizes [e.g. 4 x 1]). I was just wondering if I could change it myself manually.

EDIT:

I've attached the quick contact apk from the 928 blackglass theme. I am trying to install this onto my phone, but it won't install.
