How to play my music files?

I've put some songs into a Music folder on the sd card and I've downloaded the android music player. But the player is not seeing my songs. How do I get the player to play the songs on the sd card?

Have you tried the stock HTC player? Are your files standard .mp3 files? Are they in a folder called music?

You might try one test for me. Put just one .mp3 in the music folder in the phone storage.. the rest can reside in your music folder on the SD card. I seem to remember having a similar problem and this was my fix. Don't ask me to explain why it won't look beyond the stock folder for tunes if it's empty... no clue.

What happens if you navigate to the music file in a file explorer and click on it? Does it then give you an option to play? If not, you may have a conflict with the decoder/player and the files. Where did the files come from? Were they ripped from a cd with a specific program, or were they downloaded from somewhere?
Make sure there are no funny characters in the file names too.

Lastly, I would try a different player. Google Play Music, or Poweramp.

I had copied the files from my cd and now just realized that those are .cda and not mp3 files. I downloaded itunes and am now in the process of importing the cd into itunes. I'm hoping itunes is automatically converting everything to mp3.

If it automatically converts anything, it will likely be to mp4/aac format. Those should play fine, but if you want to, go into settings/import settings (or something similar) and change the default import settings to mp3.

Yes they were converted to MP4 and the player is playing them fine now.
I'm sure glad I found this forum, everyone is so helpful. An old geezer like me haven't played around with all this smartphone stuff til now and I'll have some more questions for sure.
