How to prevent phone from accidentally muting notifications?

For some reason my phone (moto g pure, Android 12) keeps accidentally muting the notification volume, so that if I am called it does not ring. I want it to ring when I am called.

To be crystal clear about which sound setting is changing, it's this one:

The setting circled in orange, which should be a bell icon as shown in the picture, keeps getting changed to a crossed-out bell. I don't want that to happen.

I don't know exactly how this keeps happening; maybe it's because of bouncing around in my shirt pocket.

I would like some way to make it more difficult for that setting to change accidentally, such as by disabling all the volume controls on the lock screen. Is there anything I can do?

do you have a case for it? some cases have a pretty stiff button rockers so that it is hard to hit them when in a pocket.

on my s25 ultra i can turn off the vol buttons to control media. you can try that as well.

i also found this:

Yes, I have a case. I'm not sure it's the buttons actually because just pressing up or down volume buttons doesn't seem to change the bell to the crossed-out bell, not even if I do both at once. Maybe it's the buttons in combination with my chest pressing the screen.

Volume Lock looks promising, although reviews mention extensive full-screen ads unless you get the premium version.

IT is called Mute.
You can turn it up by pressing the volume key.

On my phone pressing the volume keys changes media volume by default, not notifications (the "bell" icon). I thought that had been the default for a while, but I only used Android 12 for about an hour so might have missed a difference. Check your sound settings for an option like that, since silencing media by accident is better than silencing notifications.

Of course it may well not be the buttons, especially since another feature of my phone is that the volume key only works when the screen is unlocked (hence not likely that they'll change by accident). I do also use a flip case, which makes it essentially impossible for the phone to be accidentally woken and some on-screen button pressed by accident. What sort of screen lock do you use?

There are a surprising number of apps that can control Do Not Disturb functions, or at least have the permission (apps often request permissions they don't use, due to lazy programming). So maybe check what has that permission and whether any of them could be responsible? I personally use Tasker to automatically silence my phone during calendar appointments where I've marked myself as "busy", but it's possible that you've got some app doing it without you knowing (I'd think calendar or media apps would be the things to check). If it happens at certain times/days check your Do Not Disturb settings to make sure there isn't some timed profile active (there may be some default one that's been accidentally activated.
