Help How to replace cracked screen on Droid ?

Motorola repairs them for $75.

I personally never get insurance for my phones for two reasons:

1) They wouldn't offer the insurance if it was a good deal or they would lose money.

2) The majority of people are never going to break/lose their phone and those that do are probably going to end up paying more in insurance premiums and deductible than the phone is worth.

That said, an $89 deductible isn't a terrible deal since the phone costs about $500 to replace brand new or $200+ for a used one on Ebay.

As to getting a cracked screen fixed, the original question, there are a few options available:

1) If you have the insurance, do that. It's the best option. If you don't have insurance...

2) Buy a used phone on Ebay for about $220. This is the most expensive option but definitely the easiest.

3) Buy the screen on Ebay and replace it yourself. The parts currently run anywhere from $40-$80 depending on where they come from (China or US). As someone who fixes these phones, I can tell you that you should only try this if you're pretty good around electronics. It's one of the tougher repairs I've ever seen to do: Lots of screws, plenty of adhesive, some tricky connectors, and one very fragile ribbon cable. Here's a video of the repair: YouTube video.

4) Lastly, you can have a professional repair service repair it for you. In the spirit of full disclosure, I'll tell you that I run a company that does Droid repairs. However, a quick Google search may reveal some other companies as well. We charge $120 to do the repair and it takes about a week from the time you mail it until you get it back. It's not as cheap as the do-it-yourself option but its a lot safer and definitely cheaper than going the new phone route.

yeah, lets hear about the Motorola deal! I dropped my phone from 2 ft onto a crushed gravel parking area just last night :( and the top L corner cracked. It affects only a small portion of the screen, and the LCD below the glass is not damaged.

Will the capacitive screen work if I place a small sheet of properly shaped plex over it?

Anyone have any suggestions on how to acquire a replacement screen for the Droid? I have found one company : portatronics.com who will repair the phone if you send it in. Looked for a DIY video on Utube but to no avail...hmmm...it's just a hairline crack in the upper corner from a drop but i can see it getting worse in the future. Ofcourse I didn't buy insurance!

most of the other phones when dropped the screens do not crack. So Maybe verizon should be responsible when there are alot that seem to do so when dropped.

Yes exactly, who would have thought glass would crack when dropped on a hard surface?!? pfft, what a crazy concept.

Wait let me get this straight... you want a company... that has nothing to do with how or who built the phone, be responsible, because you don't know how to take care of the phone and not drop it? Honestly, PLEASE tell me you are joking? And iPhones are known to crack from the SLIGHTEST drop. (And yes I do know, I repair them daily, cool phone, terribly built. Not very durable.) Have dropped my droid MANY times, never a crack in the screen. I constantly leave it on my lap in the car (cause every guy loves their junk vibrated when they get a call, text.) and I'll forget and go to get out of said car and WHAM! Phone smacks the ground... still never a crack in the screen. You do know these things don't double as a blacksmith iron right? Plastic, aluminum, glass... all very breakable.

When it comes down to it... it's your fault.. either buy the insurance, buy a new phone, or pay to have the screen fix/fix it yourself. and you guys sit there and compare the $6 a month to the price you dished out to get the phone, apperently dont realize thats not what the phone costs. They give you the phone for a VERY low price because they make the rest of the money back on your contract term. hence why you have 2year contracts, and early term fees. The actually price of the Droid 2 phone is about $600 (thats the one i have so used it as a baseline). so, $6 a month for 24months = $144 in insurance for a $600 phone... seems worth it to me? And i state this becasue if you go to any mobile company and say, I'm a ****** and broke my phone, i am too cheep to buy the insurance, can i get a new phone free? they are going to change you full retail price for a phone which ranges $500-$600. Ebay your looking about the same price, just make sure it doesnt come from Yeman. < /Rant >

Just wanted to give an update on Motorola fixing the screen. I contacted them today and it is $110 for them to replace the screen and 5-7 days to get it back.

If you can make a call on the phone dial 611 and buy the insurance. You can add insurance to a phone if you can make a call with it.

Unfortunately, not fully correct....sorry :( Depends on what company you bought your phone through. Fought with the company for an hour! I have had my phone for 2 weeks and nothing is wrong with it. The store that I got the phone from did not give me the insurance that I thought I was getting. They are telling me that I cannot add insurance after I have already activated the phone! This company is horrible!

Personally I love the Droid! :D But they shouldnt sell thier products to horrible company's, such as the one who is treating me this way. :(

Thank you for taking my ventage guys ;)

Hey guys, I also had a similair problem except for much worse. The screen is nearly shattered but the phone works perfectly fine and is 90% still visible. I have the 3 month warranty and its an EVO shift. Would the warranty cover me dropping it? Or do I have to buy a new one? is there any way to get the screen repaired?

I have a link to where you can get replacements screens reasonable, but I am not allowed to post it here because I am new....

If you are interested, just let me know and I will be happy to pass it on!
