Root How to Root 2.1 Droid

The name of that article is misleading. It's just downgrading to 2.0.1 and flashing a rooted 2.1 on top of that. You aren't really rooting 2.1.

Is this still accurate? Is the only way to have a rooted 2.1 install through a root of 2.0.1 and the installation of a custom 2.1 rom (e.g. Bugless Beast v1.1)?

So what would be the difference, if any, between updating with a "rooted" 2.1 and simply (i know it's not possible yet) rooting from the official 2.1 update?

As another poster mentioned, is there any functional difference? As 2.2. is now coming into its own, it'd be good to clarify the differences, if any, between the 2.0.1 -> 2.1/2.2. method and the stock 2.1/2.2 versions.

The advantage of rooting 2.1 is that you can use either Titanium backup or MyBackup Pro to backup your apps and app data prior to flashing a new custom ROM, which will make flashing to a new ROM easier.
