How To How to root and install droid 2.1

Maybe I missed this somewhere but on the intial post you indicated that you updated the method and humancyborg's rom. Is that the mediafire link now included in the flan or is that a previous rom (and I will need to locate humancyborg's)? Thanks in advance. I've finally decided to take the plunge and just wanted to verify this before getting started.

I am havingno luck getting the 2.1 file to download. it keeps getting hung up in the middle of the d/l and disconnecting..

it's humancyborg's rom, i wouldnt mention one rom but post another and good luck w/ the procedure :)

Everything installed fantastically for the most part! I am running the animated wallpaper and am having no lagging issues whatsoever. The only thing that is a PITA is going through and downloading and then setting up all of the apps. I can't imagine having to do this every time a new rom comes out or an update surfaces. Is there any way to forgo having to do all this (e.g., setting up email, downloading all apps)? Or is this something that will need to be done each time a new rom or update comes out? Also, I am again unable to delete apps like amazon mp3. Do I need to reroot after installing 2.1? I thought this update allowed SU.

So I have a slight problem, I can download the HC 2.1 SU DROID BOOT.zip file, but, when I try to unzip it, I get an error that says it is invalid or corrupt. Is there a certain program to use to unzip it or am I doing something wrong?

AND THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR A TUTORIAL THAT ACTUALLY MAKES SENSE AND WORKS!!!!!

There is an issue with mediashare right now where it's sometimes stopping the download before its complete. try d/ling it again and keep an eye on it. i had to try like 5 times before I was able to d.l the entire file.

i installed the apk but when i go to device manager i don't see motorola a855 and when i open droid helper and scroll down it says flash 99.1b recovery. please help

Well...I think this was a great way to root...and if you are sure you want to do that I highly recommend.

However, be sure you dont want to unroot be fore you do it. I am not sure if anyone else has tried speedymons unroot technique. But I cant get it to work. I get an error... "status 25".

Anyone able to help me?

well it's a zip and if you're using windows, you should be able to do a regular extract but for what it's worth, i use winrar

setting up apps is trivial work and i dont know if there is a way to save everything. the amazon mp3 app is a pre-installed app in android phones with the stock android. there's no need to reroot. this does allow SU, if you want/need proof, download a terminal from the Android Market and type SU

Gotcha on that. I just thought one of the reasons for rooting is the ability to delete apps that you don't ever use (e.g., amazon mp3, corporate calendar.

Yeah, it's not just the apps, its everything ya know. Setting up email, bluetooth connections etc.. Not a big deal todo every so often but.... well, ya know ;)

Thanks man.

Do I drop on SD and use install function? or unpack and place folder in nandroid.

I believe this is an install...but at this point I would rather ask the dumb question than make a mistake.

drop on sd and use the install function

what you mean it's recognizing it?

I drop the file Eclair_2.0.1.zip on the SD card. Booted in recovery, wiped the data and the cache. entered the install menu and selected choose ROM from SD card...but there is nothing there.

it's an update file, not a rom file

LOL...This just proves I am not good enough with this stuff to be doing this....so forgive me...but how exactly do I do this?

-download the file i gave you
-rename it update [if it gives you an error when you try updating your phone, go back and rename it update.zip and try again]
-put it on your sd
-turn your phone off
-then turn it back on pressing the x button on the keyboard and the power button
-scroll all the way down to INSTALL
-you'll have 3 options, choose the 2nd 1
*should say Install /sdcard/update.zip

That is what I thought...I had tried that but got an error...so thought I was doing something wrong.

This is what I get:

Assert failed: apply_patch_check("/system/app/alarmClock.apk", "36fa8c6f8036e4bed36056c1797c4ee40f746b3c","face4902c83611a0e55c8640dc95133ebe2c5fla")
E:Error in /sdcard/update.zip
(status 7)
Installation aborted.

I already had my phone rooted, but I used this process to install the 2.1 ROM today. My impressions:

I have absolutely no experience in this sorta thing, so I found the video walkthrough on YouTube to be extremely helpful. Actually that's an understatement, I don't think I would have figured this out without that video. I had taken brief attempts at installing a 2.1 ROM using other walkthroughs, for some reason beyond explanation this is the only one that makes use of the Droid Root Helper...it almost makes it too easy. Sooo...watch the video and it's not that hard!

Functionality - Overall seems very snappy. I don't know if it was ever an issue with the HC ROM, but the GPS works. Also not experiencing any issues with the live wallpapers, my phone runs just as smoothly with them on. The backlight issue with the physical keyboard is kind of a bummer but I can live with the quick fix (press the sleep button twice) for now.

The only issue that really bothers me, and really has me stumped, is with the Advanced Task Manager app. For some reason, when I end all, my phone kinda lags for a second and then takes me to whatever settings menu I was last in. Could be the phone function, could be the settings to an application, etc. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling, rebooting, etc etc with no luck. I think I can live with it, although I REALLY REALLY wanted 2.1 lol.

Thanks to the OP for organizing all this info in one place, and thanks to the guy who posted the YouTube video! Loving 2.1!

Hmmm...I tried to revert back to 2.0.1 to see if recycling between that and 2.1 would fix the task manager bug, but now it seems I have a problem.

I thought reverting back to 2.0.1 was as simple as: taking the 2.1 nandroid backup out of the nandroid folder, putting the 2.0.1 nandroid backup in the nandroid folder, power off, boot into recovery, and select simple nandroid restore (latest) and it should be good to go.

I'm getting this "Exited with an error 1 status" when it attempts the restore. Am I missing something?

Although I like 2.1, I don't want to be stuck.
