Root how to root htc desire?

So my friend with this htc phone saw the awesomeness of rooting on my phone (xperia play) and I learned how to do it via help on this forum so I thaught Ide ask for some more about his htc desire.
what's the best and easiest way to root? Not to load custom roms but just to have superuser access.
