How to root the new Jellybean update

Atma

For anyone that wants to root or reroot the 4.1.2 update, its pretty simple. Use Odin to install http://goo.im/devs/OpenRecovery/hercules/openrecovery-twrp-2.4.4.0-hercules.tarTWRP Touch Recovery 2.5.0.0. Power off and boot into TWRP recovery.

How to get to recovery: Power off the phone, Hold both volume buttons and the power button at the same time. When the phone vibrates, let go of the power button but keep holding both volume buttons. In a few seconds you should be in the recovery menu.

In TWRP, Select Reboot, then System, TWRP will tell you that you are not rooted and ask if you want to root. Use the Swipe bar at the bottom to root then follow the instructions to install SuperSu.

ive done that but still no root. also tried cwm with different superuser versions with no success. recovery installed, superuser installed but no su binary seems to install. had my phone rooted before upgrading but not having any luck getting it done with jellybean. did factory reset and wipe in recovery and repeated procedure but no root.:(

CWM-SuperSU-v0.87.zip You might try this superuser. I saw someone say they were able to root with it.

I'm not sure why TWRP isn't working for you. Are you using 2.4.4.0? Did you see an app that said something like install su? Is the SuperSU app in your tray?

Hey atma, its the twrp version linked in the op. I used the 2.5 twrp link in your other thread and it worked for me.

If you have a CWM nandroid but you install TWRP will you be able to use the CWM backup?

Meaning... my CWM nandroid backup is ICS. But I'd be rooting the new Jellybean using TWRP?

Normally TWRP won't read CWM backups and vice versa. I thought I saw someone say a few days ago that TWRP would read CWM backups now. I'm not sure about that and I wouldn't count on it. If you absolutely wanted to go back to your ICS nandroid you could always load CWM back on.

I have tried everything.supersu, superuser (a billion versions), busybox installer different versions. my best guess is that the permissions are screwed up for the su file but without root they cant be fixed. I have flashed and rebooted a thousand times. I am resigned to live without root at this point/

Don't give up yet. :)

Do you have a telus or koodo phone by chance? I know they have had trouble.

First, try this superuser. https://www.dropbox.com/s/1fe4cop1u1xl88i/su-3.0.5-efgh-signed.zip

Put it on your sd card and flash in recovery. If that doesn't work, try wiping and flashing the rom again. Then flash the new TWRP 2.5.0.0 file and see if it will root you.

I know someone else had trouble and they got it to work by going back to ICS, updating with kies instead of odin, then using odin to install twrp and they were finally able to root with twrp.

First attempt install "aborted", 2nd attempt succeeded but superuser 3.13 was still in app list as system app. disabled 3.13 and reattempted to install 3.05. again. 1st try aborted and 2nd succeeded but after reboot, no superuser anywhere to be found accept in the app disabled list (3.13).

If I get bored someday, I will attempt to reflash rom and start from scratch again but I just dont have the patience for it right now.

when I try to flash superuser 3.05 or 3.07 I get installation aborted ..error in /emmc/superuser. when I flash any other superuser , most recently 3.13, I get root complete. superuser and su binary are installed to the phone (t989 tmobile) but no apps work that require root (permission box never pops up) and root checker apps say not rooted.

Try flashing 3.13 one more time. I've had that problem before. Says I have root but it doesn't work. Flashing one more time usually fixes it. Maybe you'll get lucky and it will work.

flashed 3.13 again, all went according to plan, but still cant get any root access apps to work. superuser permissions pop up doesnt come up at all and root checker app says no root.

funny thing is , when I go into the superuser app , click info to get to the binary upate page and try to update the su binary, everything seems to work. it downloads su binary, gets root to allow copy and remounts ok. but still no actual root.

I think I'll just flash a rom from xda thats already rooted with bloatware removed. thanks for all your suggestions.

just an update... I ended up soft bricking my phone by doing something stupid so I reflashed stock rom via Odin, flashed twrp 2.5, and then rebooted to system..was asked if I wanted to install supersu. I swiped, supersu installer was in app tray and everything went according to plan. fully rooted.

I have now moved on to a custom rom and experimenting with that, but all seems well now in root heaven. :)

That's great gvc! Glad you finally got it. :)

thanks Atma for your help. I am new at using custom roms so I am still trying to figure out their nuances. I am new over at XDA so I'm not allowed to post questions on the development thread for this phone. I am using Jellybeast and my only problem I have is there doesnt seem to be dnla file sharing support as all the options to turn it on are greyed out and cant be accessed at all. That is an available option on the stock rom that I was using but cant with this rom. guess I could download a separate media server for this purpose?

I've never tried the dnla and am not really familiar with it. I looked through the jellybeast thread a little but can't see anything about it. Take a look at this thread I found and see if it gives you any ideas. I see version 3 of Jellybeast came out today. Have you tried it? You might also try Jedi Mind Trick Jellybean. Its pretty smooth. I'm not sure if the file sharing works in it though.
