How to root to ICS?

Ok another thread about rooting, as I learn learn learn.

I gaev up on JB for now, because of the gps issue, that aside I now wanna go to ICS rom, but I seem to have run into a snag.

I am using 41g-ATB-cwm-0910 right now.
I downloaded http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=30179536&postcount=3670 aokp_epic4gtouch_milestone-6-20120720.zip

Now when I try and flash it in cwm I get an error trying to flash it that goes somthing like this:
assert failed getprop, goes thru the getprop info, and SPH-d710, then says (status7) and aborts.
My thought from reading on the net and watching videos, there is no FI22 build how-to out there so my thought is I need to go back to gb el29 kernel with cwm 5x then put on the ics roms I want. Is my assumption correct? and could someone possibly make a write up for going from stock ics to ics roms perhaps?

You can always Odin back to original FG31 Stock then re-root

So I decide to put on an ics rom instead. Well I fiddle around for a couple hours because I couldn't seem to find a rom, (I prefer aokp the best) so I finally find one, and I'm pretty excited at this point.
So I try and put the rom on, to find out it bails/aborts on install via recovery. So I'm asking around and finally found out the universal script in the meta folder is written all weird, so I adjust it accordingly, and finally get the phone to boot up with the new rom, all is good, right? nope.
I got into the settings, and first thing I try is gps, because at this point with JB I'm really skeptical, so I decide to test gps via an app called GPS Status & Toolbox and to my shock and surprise, Gps doesn't even work. All I get is a gps symbol with no blinking, no white circle in the middle, nothing, like gps is not even turned on, just the outer part of the gps symbol pops up.

So all this in these last couple of days, and I'm back to stock rooted rom LOL.

I've seen other roms, but aokp has a feature I really like, as well as do some other JB roms, where it has the toggles in notification, and thier scrollable, that's just a plus to me, all the rest of the rom is basically just modded colors and icons, and stuff, it's basically the exact same as stock is. I personally want something that stands out from the stock version, not just modified colors and icons. Caulkins is that way, very generic, as is the Blue rom, (forget what the name is right now).........cm9 and CODENAME both have broken camera and/or video, so that's no good either.
