well there are a stack load of apps that require root access (such as CPU controllers that allow for overclocking) that won't be included in Froyo, however, i do agree with you that for people too afraid or not quizical enough to root then Froyo is going to provide a huge number of the benefits of rooting; such as A2SD and WiFi tethering!
Personally i rooted instead of waiting for three reasons:
1) A2SD+
2) SU permissions for advanced file management
3) Wanted to test myself to see if i could figure out rooting 0.80 bootloader! lol
To Sawdust though, I don't think so dude because in the MoDaCo thread mentions if you have a bootloader over 0.80 then click here ....
