Root [HOW TO] Root Your Incredible, Whatever It's Status

I got a little confused because the link says it's for the evo. Anyways I'm gonna try this after my visit to verizon. Also I have the OTA update 2.2. Can you confirm that this method will work?

So I've successfully installed the stock recovery but when I go to apply the update.zip it's giving me an "Error in /sdcard/update.zip (Status 7)". It gives a more detailed explanation which I'll type out below, thanks in advance for any help!:

-- Install from sdcard...

assert failed: file_getprop("/system/build.prop"
, "ro.build.fingerprint") == "verizon/inc/inc/in

file_getprop("/system/build.prop", "ro.bu
ild.fingerprint") == "verizon_wwe/inc/inc/inc:2.
2/FRF91/231334:user/release-keys"
E:Error in /sdcard/update.zip
(Status 7)
Installation aborted.

If you get an error saying something about invalid release keys when installing the update, you are trying to do so with the wrong software version (even if you have 2.1update).

IF YOUR SOFTWARE NUMBER IS: 1.22.605.0 the official Froyo 2.2 OTA will not work until you firsst flash the May leaked 2.2 OTA to bring your bitch to 1.22.605.2. DOWNLOAD IT HERE:

https://android.clients.google.com/p...n.a33bc3bf.zip (You may have an alert about the page, but just click proceed anyway - its a false positive)

AND FLASH IT IN RECOVERY as "update" from the root of your SD before deleting it and then flashing the official 2.2 over top of it.

Now you are ready to pick up where you left off.

Jeah.

I was already S-Off when the OTA came down, so I tried this starting from step 6. However, I've been unable to get it to work.

Hboot .92
Android Version 2.2
Baseband Version 2.15.00.07.28
Build number 3.21.605.1 CL231334release-keys
Software number 3.21.605.1

After I run the PB31IMG.zip and try to boot into recovery, it gets hung at the htc Incredible screen, and the battery starts to get warm. I've left it there for 10 minutes, but it got warm enough I did a battery pull. I've tried downloading the file three times, installing it 4 times (and once over top of itself.)

Luckily I have another PB31IMG file with the original recovery, so I'm back to stock for now. Any ideas?

The main reason I want to re-root on 2.2 is for the Battery Life Fix. It looks like this will enable us to get the full potential from our batteries without bump-charging.

Long definition here.

Short explanation: to install a custom boot loader and superuser permissions, which enable you to access the root directory of your operating system, and make changes (for good or ill.)

It's very easy to brick your phone doing this.

What it allows you to do: Over/under clock your CPU, use non-Google ROMs (which are basically user-modified or created versions of 2.2 software that change stuff, some take out the bloatware, others add in themes.) Obtain WiFi tethering for free, replace boot animations...someone else jump in here and name some!

Honestly, if ANY of this sounds bewildering, you'd be advised not to attempt any of it (though the unrEVOked3 easy root tool is simple enough, a modicum of courage is all that is needed).

Truthfully, the device is sweet without root. I have rooted, s-offed, ROMed, custom-kerneled, overclocked, etc. because I have a sickness that prevents me from enjoying my phone unless I have ****ed with it so extensively that it is akin to a heroin addiction beyond intervention.

There, I fixed that for you. :-P

Hello Everyone,

This forum has been great.

A little background, I never really thought I needed to root my DInc cause it did everything I wanted it to do. A few days ago, however I received the OTA 2.2 Update from Verizon. Immediately after receiving the OTA update my phone started a freeze fest. Constantly freezing at random times. So I decided I wanted to go back to 2.1. This thread got me there, and the freezing/crashing stopped completely. Now after reading about 2.2 and already rooting my phone to this point, I want to go for it.

So Can someone help me with Step 5? I am not sure how to install this upgrade. Do I use Unrevoked3 to do it? Do i just rename it to PB31IMG.zip? Is there a flashing program I'm suppose to be using in windows to do it? Please let me know what steps I need to do to get it installed.

I know this may be a noobish question but I really want to see what 2.2 is like doing it this way and getting rid of all those extra applications that run in the background. And knowing how easy it is to brick my phone I didn't want to go willy nilly with my own ideas of how to get it done.

5. Download and install the 2.2 OTA upgrade from http://android.clients.google.com/packages/ota/verizon_incredible/8e5ad8d6ea2d.OTA_IncredibleC_Verizon_WWE_3.21.605. 1_1.22.605.2_release_sign.zip

Update...

Nevermind. Was able to get that done and then the last steps.

Looks like I have a rooted 2.2 Dinc now. Thanks again for this awesome thread.

Now... How do I go about deleting AmazonMP3 and the rest of the useless garbage?

Good morning people! I hope you all had a great weekend.

I would like to thank those of you who assisted others over the weekend. I think I need to point out that I am far from an expert on Android, or phones. Just a guy who happens to be a long time tech geek and can figure things out if he really wants to.

For this reason I complied my list, which I believe is improving each time somebody smarter than I comes along. So thanks for that too.

Dennis

Unrevoked has released and update and 2.2 is now rooted: unrevoked.

I do not know if this makes my list obsolete or not, but I will leave it, just in case.

Dennis

Dennis, your list is still VERY helpful - shows what's actually happening when you do the "one" click rooting that unrEVOked provides.

Also the unrevoked tool is not currently live (working out some bugs apparently) but hopefully it's back up soon.

I know, I read that. But having seen them in action, I don't think it'll be long.

I'm sure you're right - Especially given that while everyone else was partying this Labor Day weekend, they were apparently busy working on easy root capabilities for stock 2.2!

I have 2.1 rooted, how to get the step 5 done? recovery? same as apply zip from SD? Cuz when I do step 6, installation aborted, so I guess I must done 5 wrong. Please help, thanks.

one thing to keep in mind, your sd card must be formatted to Fat32, (this already helped one person in this thread, and it's helped countless others in other threads) also remember to rename your zip files to update not update.zip. if you rename it to update.zip your computer will most likely rename it update.zip.zip.

good luck all =]
