Root how to root

If your running the leaked GB you are already rooted, and all you need to do is flash the rom of your choice that corresponds with your version through Droid 2 Bootstrapper

download terminal emulator and type in su once it opens, if you get a # sign instead of a $ sign then you are rooted

There were some options on some leaks to flash a non-rooted version.

OP, which leak version are you on?

settings, go to bottom, about phone, check the stuff and post back like version number etc

This. the number we're wanting is the series of three numbers starting with 5xx in the system version. I'm on .596 and mine says. 4.5.596.MB810.Verizon.en.US

Can you check the baseband? Look for .07P or .12P somewhere there.

If you have .12P you are golden, if .07P you'll have to SBF to get to better roms.

Official DX Gingerbread 2.3.3 (4.5.596) Release Thread - Something for everyone

If you have .12P then download and install gingerbreak, then droid 2 bootstrapper, then bootstrap and install gingerbread .596.

Most likely, you have .07P. SBF to 2.3.340.
Then do method 2, the 2 part install.

Then you will be on rooted .596, the current best base. Then from there you can install liberty 0.7, or apex 2.0 rc2. I would go apex, but you can just stick as stock.

I thought since the .588 update was a three parter that it included the baseband. We shall see. Hopefully he's got it and won't lose data.

nice! ok so root your phone with gingerbreak (google search), then bootstrap with D2 bootstrapper, then install that one file from the mydroidworld link that is for people already on GB

Ok cool.....so which file would i choose the 1st 2nd or 3rd amd is there like mode just in case i wanted to go back to stock?

Not to hijack this post... but I have recently updated to the ota gb and I have baseband .12p and I also have gingerbreak... when I run gingerbreak it just runs and runs and runs and doesn't do much of anything. but, according to this it should and then I can reinstall gb .596 over it with d2 bootstrapper? or is he able to do it this way because he is using the leaked version? I'm very new to this and am trying to understand everything so take it easy on me :P

Thanks in advance

He can use gingerbreak because he's on an earlier leak. The OTA cannot be rooted at this time. You'll need to SBF to 340 and then apply the 2-part zip GB install.
