Root How to root!

I'm working on it, I've tried defrosting quite a bit and trying, still haven't had any luck, I'm pretty confused right now, but I think I might try defrosting in bigger clumps and see if I can get anywhere like that.

Ok, with my configuration I can post review on the android market. 2 comments before we go into the details related to frozen apps.
1)I could not post a comment through appbrain and
2) apparently, you need to rate if you want your comment to be posted.

Please confirm that it is not the problem for you and I will provide the list of the apps that I froze (I prefer to ask first as there's some work and time needed to provide the list !)

I have not tried appbrain as I don't have it installed, I do rate, I've left multiple comments in the past, so I know how it works.

Edit: I also found that I'm having trouble posting comments on the phandroid news app. It keeps coming back as unable to connect. If I hit submit 2-4 times it seems to go through, but I've never had this problem before.

Edit: lol, also just found out that even though it says it's not going through, it actually is, a few multiple posts by me now, lol.

I'll try to test out the things I said tonight, don't know if I'll be able to get to them though.

Edit: Ok, I only tested it once so far, but I froze T-Mobile Name ID, called my phone with 2 other phones, I swapped to both phones during the call, I ended one and it went back to the other one, no incident with FC at all, it all went smooth.

I'm also going to freeze Samsung TTS right now, I'll update if I run into any problems. (Again, I do have Pico TTS as my default TTS at the moment though)

I'm also going to freeze up talk and talkback, since I already had them frozen before with no problems, and talk obviously isn't my problem with the market since I tried defrosting it. Will update with any findings.

"Google Search (GoogleQuickSearchBox.apk and GoogleQuickSearchBox.odex, Needed to show contacts that match as entering numbers in phone app and the long press menu to search function)"
Unless I misunderstand, it sounds like you mean when you are typing a number while making a call, this is used to match the number to your contacts. If this is the case, I have had this frozen and I have not had that problem, while putting in a number when making a call, I still get the popups showing me the numbers it matches. Also, it's not for the LONG press search function, just the single press of it, the long press is voice search, which this doesn't affect.

I also found that if you freeze Web, your voice search will not search, so voice search becomes useless.

Thanks for the info !

LOL, I made my list for no reason as you solved your problem. I should have checked your edits !

I'm posting it (in case it's of any interest, it's done anyway...) but will probably remove it this week-end when I will update my app post with your feedback (it's way too long !). It's seems unnecessary but I've transformed Go launcher ex to a system app before removing TWlauncher (in titanium backup, touch for a long time, the long menu appears and there's a choice to transform into system app). The headache is it resets the settings, so I had to redo the configuration... Before that, I just moved it from /data/app to /system/app it works too and save the settings but it seems less clean to me (it kept a -1 at the end of the name for me, had to reboot to see the icon properly, etc). I moved it back to /data/app (and reboot the system) before doing the titanium backup system thing.

No, I didn't solve my problem with the market, only the phandroid news thing, still can't leave a comment in the market. I'll check your list with mine later on.

Edit: ok wait, just went back to try leaving a comment on the market again and my comment is there. Did they change something on the market, it used to post instantly, that took like 2 days. It's definitely still not posting instantly. It's really not a huge deal as if I needed to leave a comment that bad I could just use the computer. I'll still check my froze with yours though.

Edit: Once again, I'm not sure if this has any relevance, but I was playing around on mylookout and I decided to try to locate my phone... I was getting the text saying it was trying to get a connection, but it would never end up locating my phone. I tried it 3-4 times. I've done it before and it found my phone without a problem. So I don't know where the problem may lie, but is there anything frozen that would cause lookout to not be able to locate my device? (I do not have lookout frozen)

Edit: Ok, the only apps that I had frozen that you do not are
android live wallpapers
com.lifevibes.trimapp
gmail
google search
polaris office
samsung keypad
samsung tts
swype
t-mobile name id
talk
talkback
terminal emulator
wi-fi calling
yelp

None of them seem like they would make a difference, but I've defrosted them all and I'm about to try it, I'll let you know what I come up with.

Edit: doesn't seem to have made a difference. Like I said, they are managing to go through, it just seems to take ALOT longer than before, since they were going in instantly before, now it takes days. Again, doesn't really matter though, not anything important to me, but it's odd that yours still works, yet even with the same exact things frozen, mine is not.

Howdy, first post here.

Just wanted to say thanks to irateiguana, Nilpotent and surgerush for your posts in this thread. I was able to successfully root my Exhibit II and get rid of a bunch of bloatware. Phone is much faster now!

For what it's worth, if you move apk's out of /system/app (and save to your sd card or something along those lines), when you move it back, you'll have to make sure the permissions on each apk are set to 644 (rw-r--r--) and reboot before they'll work right. 644 looks like this if you're using something like Root Explorer:

x x o
x o o
x o o

x = check mark

However, if you have 20 apk's you just moved back into /system/app, that can be tedious. So using either something like Terminal Emulator on your phone, or using adb through your computer, you can do the following command and it will change all apk's in /system/app to 644:

chmod -R 644 /system/app/*

If you're using Terminal Emulator, you'll probably have to add "busybox" in front of "chmod" in that line, which means you'll also need to have busybox installed - but the root method for this phone does that automatically. Just thought I'd pass that along - saved me a lot of time in the past.

Also, I've run the V6 Supercharger on this phone and it does seem to improve memory management a decent amount.

How do you know if it's actually running or not?

When you run it (after placing it in /mnt/sdcard, it seems to me I've seen the question somewhere), you have to run at boot another script called something like 99supercharger which (I think) makes effective the changes made by v6.

I will try to add a mini tutorial for v6 supercharger and the wiping dalvik cache tweak as it seems to interest people and there are potential scary moments involved... Note that I did not really notice any improvement linked to those RAM managements things (which does not mean it is not efficient !)

I'm pretty sure I got it running, I have 99supercharger running at boot, I went back into v6 and my minfree stuck, so I'm pretty sure it's running.

What setting did you go with? I ended up going with 6 because that's what someone over at xda said they went with.

Note that I did not really notice any improvement linked to those RAM managements things (which does not mean it is not efficient !)

Yeah it could be placebo for me, but the home launcher definitely redraws less (actually none since I've run it a few days ago). And so the ongoing argument for how efficiently Android manages memory/tasks continues... ;)

It does hang in some weird places though - like when I open the phone app, it tends to open VERY slow - almost thought it locked up one time, but then it popped up. But my wife's does that as well and she's not running anything; so who knows.

I'm using 6, too (I asked the question on xda and 2 other guys used 6)

Ok, sounds good.

I also wanted to note that all the extra things I had frozen that may possibly have problems associated with them, I've yet to have a problem with anything. So far so good.

Edit:
Note that I did not really notice any improvement linked to those RAM managements things (which does not mean it is not efficient !)
I also want to note that I have not personally noticed any big difference in improvement since installing V6. It MAY have helped a little with less launcher redraws, although I have had this happen once or twice, I may give bulletproof launcher a try if it happens any more often.

Edit: I may be wrong, I'm still kind of a noob, but from my understanding we need a custom kernel before we can over/underclock, so something like Setcpu would not work, correct?

Nilpotent: I don't mean to be a pain, but could you mark the apps in some way in addition to marking them with color? I'm colorblind so your list doesn't help me. :)

Either of these ways would be fine with me...

1) Separate them out into groups, like:
Freeze:
app 1
app 2...
Caution:
app 1
app 2...
Don't touch!
app 1
app 2...

2) Add a symbol in front of each app name, like "f" for freeze, "c" for caution, ! for Don't touch. I don't really care what symbols you use, just something to sort them. -, +, ! would be okay too as long as I know what they mean.

Thanks!
Tom

I'm gonna go ahead and copy and paste his list real quick and make the revisions for you just in case Nilpotent is busy, it'll only take a minute or 2 anyways. As soon as Nilpotent updates his list, I will remove my list, as it is his list by all means, I will not take credit for it.

Lol, a little more of a pain than I expected it to be... Lol, still no big deal though, I just hope it helps you.

@Nilpotent, if you want to just copy and paste my revisions, you are welcome to, I only added the + - ! symbols, I did not revise any of your text. If not, no big deal either.

Edit: deleted my list because Nilpotent has updated his.

Thanks surgerush, I appreciate it.

Not at all a problem, I'm happy to help.

Thanks ! I updated the post and I'm freezing more applications myself (talk, talkback). Sorry, time is short, I want to update the post when I'll have more time (check if I forgot some apps, etc)

If you do update anything inside the list, could you note which ones you have changed so that I or anybody else who have already looked through your list wouldn't have to go back through the entire thing again? Thanks in advance.

I'm also going to freeze Samsung TTS right now, I'll update if I run into any problems. (Again, I do have Pico TTS as my default TTS at the moment though)

Question: how to you set pico TTS as the default ? I'm not sure I understand well what those apps are doing and I can't set it as the default from the settings list.

Menu>Settings>Voice input and output>Text-to-speech settings>Default engine.. Then just click Pico TTS.

I changed my default TTS originally to Pico because my maps GPS lady was talking in gibberish through the Samsung TTS, ever since I switched to Pico it's worked fine. I don't see any reason why you'd need 2 text to speech engines anyways.

Well, this thread has given me the confidence to try rooting this and freezing (not fully deleting) a number of t mobile applications. (After a complete backup with Titanium)

That sounds relatively safe and reversible, from what I understand. Which is important to me because I really just want to make the device slightly more responsive as well as get the backup features of Titanium without locking myself out of possible updates to the device software from T-Mobile.

I especially appreciate the note on how to possibly reverse root.

Has anyone tried one of the mega ram options with v6? They both say w/512mb, which I'm assuming means with 512mb of ram, which we have. Could there be any really bad side effects of using one of these options?

Not direct answer but about v6. Since the other day, I've change the settings to 7 and installed nitro lag nullifier. I also change my cpu governor (through juice defender) to performance. I had trouble to wake up the phone (the lock screen would sometime take forever to react) but since I've done that everything is much better.

I rooted my phone early this morning with Zergrush.

It is hard to believe how /easy/ and /painless/ that was!

I also found the status messages from Zergrush to be rather adorable.

Backed up all the applications with Titanium, initially froze a number of apps, played with the phone throughout the day through several reboots to check functionality, then finally committed to full uninstalls (with my backups available in case I need to put everything back!)

I'm a complete and utter newbie to this sort of thing, and I have no idea if it is normally this easy with other phone models.

Thanks so much for this thread and all the comments!

I'm debating on whether or not to give one of the aggressive or megaram settings a try on v6. Do you know of anything actually BAD that could happen by using one of those settings? Pretty much anything at all that would make using one of these settings a bad idea?

Recently my phone has felt a bit sluggish, that's why I've been contemplating trying a new setting. I'm just trying to be extra careful with anything I do.

Sorry, no idea. V6 is pretty low level, but it is not clear to me if it's low level enough to harm the phone. It's the same for me, it took me forever to go from setting 6 to 7, it will probably take me forever to use another setting...
