Help How to select contact's # when calling

I have a number of contacts with more than one phone number. When I attempt to call one of these contacts I don't appear to be given a choice as to which number. The manual doesn't seem to help. I'm new to android. My old feature phones all did this without any problem.

Dialer -> Select "Contacts" -> Select person -> select the number you want to call.
