Root How-to: Silence boot-ups and shut-downs

If you've got root and want to silence your boot-ups and shut-downs, here's how I did it.

Disclaimer:
This How-to is meant to assist you in changing possibly critical system files. As such, following this guide is done at your own risk. I AM NOT responsible for anything that happens to your phone that is not anticipated. If you follow this guide exactly, you should not run into any issues, but if you do, you are on your own and can not hold me responsible for any of your issues.

Continue at your own risk!
Requirements:

  • Rooted Motorola Triumph
  • A Root File Explorer app (I use ES File Explorer, it's free!)
  • Download modified power-up sound file: VMU_Power_Up.mp3
  • Download modified power-down sound file: VMU_Power_Down_48_24.mp3
Notes:

  • I silenced the audio in the original files. This kept the files the same size but made them have no sound. If the files are just deleted, you'll run into issues (at least I did).
  • If you use ES File Explorer, you have to change the settings before you can easily navigate to the locations needed. To do this in ES File Explorer, do the following:
    • Open ES File Explorer
    • Press the Menu soft-key on your phone.
    • Press "Settings"
    • Under "Directory Settings", change the Home Directory from "/sdcard/" to "/"
    • Under "Root settings", check the "Root Explorer" box and accept the dialogs that follow.
    • Under "Root settings", check the "Mount File System" box and accept the dialogs that follow.
    • Done.
This will allow you to navigate where ever you need to on your filesystem through ES File Navigator without restriction, so PLEASE BE CAREFUL!
Guide:

Method #1:

  1. Download the modified power-up and power-down files listed in the requirements section.
  2. Copy the downloaded modified files to your SD card, I did this by connecting my phone to my computer via USB cable, but use whatever method works for you.
  3. Using your root file explorer, navigate to: /hidden/data/Power-on sound/
  4. Rename "VMU_Power_Up.mp3" to "VMU_Power_Up.mp3.bak" (or something else, so long as you change its filename)
  5. Cut the file that you just reanmed (VMU_Power_Up.mp3.bak")
  6. Navigate through your file explorer to the sdcard folder where you've stored the modified files and paste the renamed file. In the same folder, copy "VMU_Power_Up.mp3".
  7. Navigate back to: /hidden/data/Power-on sound/ and paste the modified file. You should now only have the modified mp3 file in this folder, not the mp3.bak file.
  8. Navigate to /system/media/audio/ui and rename the file "VMU_Power_Down_48_24.mp3" to "VMU_Power_Down_48_24.mp3.bak" (or something else, so long as your change its filename)
  9. Cut the file that you just reanmed (VMU_Power_Down_48_24.mp3.bak")
  10. Navigate to the sdcard folder where you've stored the modified file and paste the renamed file. In the same folder, copy "VMU_Power_Down_48_24.mp3".
  11. Navigate back to /system/media/audio/ui and paste the modified file. You should now have the modified mp3 file in the folder but have moved the original, renamed, file to your sd card.
  12. Done
Shutdown your phone and start it up and observe your silent animations!
:)

Method #2:
If you have custom recovery installed on your phone, you can download and install the following files via recovery.

Credit for this method goes to Merkuralex, thanks!

When I re-root, I will follow this guide. Thanks!!

Until then, I use silent boot.... :-)

  1. Using your root file explorer, navigate to: /hidden/data/Power-up-sound/
  2. Rename "VMU_Power_Up.mp3" to "VMU_Power_Up.mp3.bak" (or something else, so long as you change its filename)
  3. Navigate through your file explorer to the sdcard folder where you've stored the modified files and copy "VMU_Power_Up.mp3".
  4. Navigate back to: /hidden/data/Power-up-sound/ and paste the modified file.
The folder was /hidden/data/Power-on sound/ on my Triumph.

For convenience sake now that we have a working recovery I made a flashable zip that silences the power cycle sounds via this method.

EDIT: actually this apparently doesn't properly edit the power down sound, I will edit again when I have it fixed.

Yes things get much easier and streamlined when you have recovery at your disposal.
I'll update the first post when you get the final zip done and posted.

Oddly... just renaming the power up sound did not work for me, but renaming the power down sound did work. I had to delete the original power up sound before the lady would stop screaming bloody mary.. errr... virgin mobile at me

That's because the way the power up sound is loaded is different from the power down sound.

Once the phone is rooted, if the video file for startup/shutdown can be located, can a new video file with the same name and parameters just be put in it's place?

You're speaking of the boot animation, which is a series of PNG images that are loaded in a certain sequence which is the "video" you see when the phone boots.

Just do a google search of "android change bootanimation.zip" or something of the like and you'll find what you're looking for.

Interesting.. I will look into it as soon as I can.
Just from looking in the zip, it looks like you put it in "Power-on-sound", when looking at my phone, I see the folder is actually "Power-on sound". Would changing the folder name in the zip be enough to fix this?

Huh, I swear I changed that. Yes that is what was wrong I uploaded a fixed zip to the same location.

Just tried the new zip, but it still didn't work - the file doesn't get replaced. Not sure what's wrong.

Actually, I even tried the original instructions in the first post, renaming the original power up sound, and pasting the new blank one, and it still played. I had to move the backup I made to my sd card (essentially deleting it) before the sound stopped playing. It looks like this is what wsimon was talking about. Very weird behavior.

I changed the directions to include cut/paste of the original files from their folders to the memory card. I guess I did this step without realizing it and neglected to include it in the directions.

Essentially all you're doing is replacing the original sound files with identical, yet muted, modified files. There's not much more to it but alas, people need to have someone hold their hands through the simplest of things...

Ok, now THAT worked, I wonder why you need to remove the old file.
