when i first open my phone screen rather then going right to my home page it opens to a google search screen and i can't figure out how to stop that if it can be done at all. i tap my screen to wake and up pops the google search then i have to push the home button to go to the home page.

I think you may be swiping from too far down. See what happens if you start your swipe above the home screen.
