Help How to stop processes accessing 3G data services?

My Desire Z connects via 3G every day, even though I have disabled data using APNDroid and also disabled Background Data on the Accounts & Sync screen. I want to stop this, as I'm on a PAYG/pay-per-connection data tariff and this is costing me money! Can anyone advise on how I can prevent this?

I haven't rooted (am a little nervous), and my firmware is 1.82.161.1 which means I'd have to downgrade first (making me even more nervous).

According to 3G Watchdog these are the processes that are accessing my data service:

The following is the list that I get from 3G Watchdog:
1. Phone
Dialer Storage
SIM toolkit
Field test

2. Network Location
com.android.qxdmlog
Settings
Settings Storage
Accounts & Sync
Setup
HTC Hub
Android System
HTC Function Test Program 1.04g
HTC checkin service
Brcm bluetooth services
Google backup transport
VPN services
Upgrade Setup
CLock

3. DCS service
Calendar storage
Customisation settings provider
Open Sense plugin manager
HTC location service
com.htc.dcs.service.stock
Stocks
HTC weather sync provider
Friend Stream
com.htc.provider.settings
Weather provider
Peep
Customisation setup
DCS utility component
Weather agent service
HTC media uploader
Connect to PC
Facebook to HTC sense
Flickr

Can anyone advise on how I can stop the above processes accessing my 3G data service?

Menu>Settings>Wireless & Networks and uncheck Mobile network.

Thanks - I'll try this. Is there any way of having this switch as a widget on the homepage? (I run Launcher Pro, rather than the usual HTC Sense homepage).

I have the same issue as the OP, but I don't want to have to switch off 3G in order to deal with the processes that keep downloading the data. There are some processes I _want_ to use the 3G.

What I don't understand is why certain processes (my list looks similar to the OP's) use a lot of data when I'm not actively using my phone. Location services is a biggie. I've turned that off but it still seems to be using data. Also the SIM Toolkit is another one.

I understand when Google voice, gmail, and other services use my data connection...I _want_ that. However, if I'm providing data for Google or ATT (I'm on an ATT GoPhone), I don't want to have to pay for their data access.

On various forums I've found others trying to figure out why their data usage is so high even when the phone isn't being used. It would be nice to pay for the data that I use, rather than have to go with a higher amount because the system keeps uploading data to servers somewhere.

Anyone know why these system services are using so much data and/or how to stop it?

Thanks!
