Help How to switch Chromecast off on Android tablet?

jo69

Android Enthusiast
I use Chromecast with my Android tablet.
I love my Chromecast and enjoy looking at my photos, viewing web pages and watching online videos through it.

But i cant seem to find a way to stop it playing and return to tv mode.

You're right.

Chromecast's HDMI-CEC is coded to only activate the HDMI it's plugged in to (and depending on the TV, switching to the Chromecast and even turning it on).

There's no deactivate or off function, you have to use the TV remote.

But is that stopping the chromecast carrying on playing?
Not bothered about switching it off. Just want it to stop playing in the background when i go back to watching cable tv.
Also how do i pause it also?

You want to stop the playback before switching by disconnecting using whatever app is connected. After that when you switch to another source it'll go to sleep.

What apps are you using with your Chromecast?

This is all new to me. Just using the android chromecast android app. But couldnt find anything there that said stop. Also viewed photos through ES Explorer. Last night i played a movie from my android tablet that was on a webpage. Just couldnt stop it playing

OK, so the way Chromecast works is the control is on the phone but the content comes off of the web and goes straight to the Chromecast.

Unless you localcast from your phone storage, then there's more to do because the phone is the server. There's an app just for that -

Check out "LocalCast for Chromecast/DLNA"

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.stefanpledl.localcast

Finally, your phone does the most work and you get the least control when you go below localcasting and just screen cast through the Chromecast app. That's usually your last resort, that's what it's for and it does a good job for that.

As for casting videos on a web page, there's an app for that and as long as it's a modern video, works great -

Check out "Web Video Caster (Chromecast)"

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.instantbits.cast.webvideo

But if it's an old style Flash video, you have to screen cast that.

Thank you. This all sounds very complicated lol.
Are these programs free and will they just work if i install without needing to be set up?
As wouldnt have a clue.

I had looked for something on my phone/tablet to stop casting. But even switching it off didnt work.

If I switch over and watch tv is the chromecast still running the file (photos moves etc) i have cast?

Cant understand if my phone does the controling why i cant find anything to press to stop casting though. Grr

I'm sorry, I've tried to explain all of this.

If you stop casting and switch to the TV, the Chromecast goes to sleep. If you just switch to the TV while casting , the Chromecast keeps running as if you're watching it.

The apps are easy to use and cost nothing to try. They require zero setup, Chromecast is about as simple as it gets.

If it's all too much, just screen cast with the Chromecast app and stop casting, using the same page on the Chromecast app, when you're done.

Honestly, I bet that this will make more sense if you don't overthink it.

Screen casting only gives you a fraction of the benefits that Chromecast offers and the apps are pretty self explanatory.

Thanks for your patience :)

You said " If it's all too much, just screen cast with the Chromecast app and stop casting, using the same page on the Chromecast app, when you're done."
But nothing appears there to click on to stop it. :(

Three bars, upper left reveals -

The cast screen button leads to -

When you want to stop casting follow the same path again but then the final screen shows you the button to stop casting.

And I wasn't trying to express frustration with you, more hoping that the previous explanations would help if you gave them a fresh look - no big deal though, sometimes I don't get things unless explained differently, I think we all have that in common.

Thanks. For some reason the disconnect button doesnt appear.
And you're screen casting from that path shown in the previous post?

If you're screen casting from your settings (assuming that your phone has that option) you probably don't want to. Originally that appeared in Jellybean 4.2 for Miracast devices (think: Roku and Amazon stick) and then supposedly switched to Chromecast in Lollipop - and has drawn a lot of complaints.

If you did connect via the previous post, maybe make sure that your Chromecast and Google Play Services are up to date.

From your app manager, Chromecast ought to be at 1.11.11 and Google Play Services at least at 7.5.

Yes they are both up to date. Had also been able to view my photos through the Quickpic App on Chromecast But that didn't work last night:oops:
