Hi Sam,

The Galaxy Nexus does not work with Kies, only Samsung Galaxy S phones do. Here is an article with different ways of doing what you ask: How To: Sync Android With Microsoft Outlook | PCMag.com

Once you sync for the first time, all your contacts will be backed up on your Google Account.

I've moved this to the Samsung Galaxy Nexus forum so other device owners can help you out.
