Help How to sync with Ubuntu

The Fascinate appears in my Computers menu as a USB device but I can't open it. Do I need to "root" my device to put music and pictures on it?
 
Thanks for the link. It took me a while to figure out what and where the Notifications panel was. But I got it straightened out and have my music on it now.
