how to turn off Android typing suggestions?

I just got a NEC Terrain and I really like it. But I am having a problem. There is a typing suggestion bar the covers the bottom edge of the taking up valuable real estate on an already small screen and sometimes cover up buttons making the impossible to get to. I don't know what this bar is called but it hold little words like IF, And, IS, I, A, TO, and that sort. I really need to get rid of it. I have turned off everything under the keyboard settings and it still remains. What is this bar called and how do I get rid of it? Thanks.

It's called the predictive text bar or the XT9 bar. You need to uncheck the XT9 checkbox in your keyboard settings for the bar to vanish.

Thanks, but what I am talking about is not the predictive text bar. The bar I am talking about only holds a certain set of words like, "if" "it" "is" "and" "to" "a" "I" "etc", etc, etc. It does not try to predict what I am typing.

There is no XT9 option in my Keyboard settings, and I said before, I have turned off everything available in the keyboard setting already. Thanks for the try though.

Here is a screen shot of what I am talking about. The little grey bar at the bottom of the screen. It appears on any screen where text can be typed.

Yeah. It disables all special functions of the keyboard, so it is not a solution. My question is, what type of keyboard app is Adaptxt. There are many keyboard app out there for touchscreen phones. But what I need is an keyboard for a physical keyboard that will replace the Adaptxt app. Or another way around this. The main problem is that this stupid helper bar cover up important function icons making it impossible to use some apps with this phone. The phone is actually really good, except for this problem. As soon as I can figure a way around this, my S2 Skyrocket may go in the garbage because I am tired of fighting with it.

I don't know if you can get around this. It may be baked into the os to provide both hard and soft keyboard support. At this point, you'll really have to check with NEC to see if they have alternate keyboards as I don't know of any from the play store that work with physical keyboards.

Apologies to jungleexplorer. I thought you were a spammer for a bit! I tried the program and ended up not liking it. My issue with adaptxt was that it had limited special symbols (what the hell program doesn't have a caret symbol?!). The program you recommended seemed to have even fewer symbols! I'll stick with nothing for now. You can see my reply in that other thread. One of these days I'll figure out how to root this and all these woes will disappear.
