I installed Handcent as I found that everytime someone text me it would just display their number but not the name of the contact. Handcent is working for me and doing what I want but the only problem is that i get a notification from both. I would like to know how to turn off the notification for the default messaging app, including the sound, vibrate, led light and the lil envelope that shows up.

Welcome to the forums! 
Open the default messaging app, hit menu, settings, notifications and uncheck the box which says "Received Notification". That will turn them off for the default app.
