How to update my android 4.1.2 to the latest android?

Tried updating phone just now, pressed software update, but nothing it said this device has been modified. Cannot update. What now? Im a total noob in phones.

For rooted phones, see developers instructions for that specific ROM but these are usually... d/l .zip ROM and flash via CWM Recovery. For more details see the All Things Root section of the forum.

My phone is rooted.

Can you please recommend me a rom? Im feeling overloaded with all these choices. I don't care for anything just want the latest - fastest- most stable Android that doesn't look to different if possible then the default one?
