Root how to update while rooted.

I have an HTC Evo 4g Lte. Sprint. My phone is rooted with S-on. With Evilution ROM
I read that this model will get a update to sense 5 and Android 4.3 later this year
My question is how to update or whether I could update my phone being rooted.

Thank you

youre not going to be able to use the system update feature if you made any changes to /system (rom) on your phone. If you want the update you would have to return the phone to a completely stock condition (no recovery, root, etc.), or wait until a developer includes the updates in a custom rom.

welcome to AF!!!!!!!!!!!!!

well i doubt that officially the phone will get sense 5 and 4.3. but rest assured our devs are working hard to get sense 5(there is one out but i think it is still in beta) and 4.3 ported over at some point.

however, i think for you the difficulty will be is having s-on as you will most likely see 4.3 in the form of an aosp rom rather then a sense rom. and flashing is more difficult with s-on.

we have moonshine now that will get s-off and is much easier now then the previous root methods.

the info is in the sticky above and can be found here:http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-lte-all-things-root/605567-ltevo-rooting-dummies-complete-guide.html

USA HTC president says we're getting 4.3 with Sense 5 by the end of the year. :)

And the list of AOSP 4.3 choices is really expanding. TSP and codefire Xperiment have joined the ranks.

The big Sense roms have been Superjelly, MeanBean and Viper4G - devs for the first two have moved on, but Vin had committed to support the next full update from Sprint, so expect to see Viper4G with the new goods after that.

And without a doubt - this is now the time to get s-off, do NOT wait and assume that you can have it after the update hits.

In any case, you'll be able to update via TWRP, expect a stock rooted 4.3/Sense 5 to drop quickly after the OTA.

Thanks All.

I am going to stick with Evilution, for now. I have tried using the Moonshine method of getting S-off, but it does not work for me. I get to the point of Moonshining <10>, after that it says Error: Don't drink and Shine. I have no idea what to do to fix that..

other methods just intimidate me. Another question, is there a list of S-on ROMS for the Evo 4g LTE?

Any rom can be flashed with s-on, you just need some extra steps to flash the kernel - no big deal. :)

Some rom installers try to do the s-on kernel installation for you, but don't always succeed, so worst case is the same as the standard case, just flash the kernel separately.

PS - Moonshine requires a stock rom to work - Evilution may not be compatible with it. Just saying.

not sure on evilution, but you need to be on an updated firmware and being s-on you most likely need to re-lock the bootloader and then take the ota so that your firmware is up to 3.16.651.3 which is not the latest (we just had another OTA released.....not sure if moonshine will work with that one).

once you are on the 3.16 firmware updated then you can unlock the bootloader again and then run moonshine to get s-off.

Yup, that was a response to my direct question about it ;).

And I expect that stock rooted will drop within hours of that OTA being pushed (or however long it takes for me to adb pull it :).

And to reiterate what was already said, you should S-OFF before taking any OTA. The existing methods work on software versions up to 3.16.651.3, so if you go higher than that, there is no S-OFF method that is confirmed to work.

If I could give all of you's a big giant hug I would.. totally. This forum is less confusing than other forums, other forums, is like reading a science textbook, or a technical paper, its like you need a advanced degree in computers to know what they are talking about..

We're all Bozos on this bus and we're all in this together.

Here you're welcome to ask any questions and also to argue with us and repeat the questions until it's happening for you and yours is the way you want - providing we know lol. Which is pretty often.

Anyway, welcome again to the monkey house! :)
