Help How to upgrade Galaxy Note 5 to Android 2.1 or higher?

I no longer have any windows machines and can't for the life of me get this junk phone to be recognized by mac. I have poured over countless howto's and tried over a dozen sync applications most of which want android 2.1 or higher. Most web searches suspiciously lead to useless verizon websites. The software load on this phone is the worst software load I have ever seen on a mobile. It is absolutely atrocious.

I can't upgrade galaxy note 5 to 2.1. Verizon is blocking this. Yes, I was stupid to buy a verizon phone, (well my company bought it but lucky for us we only have 1 year contracts) I'm stuck with it for 3 more months until I get go back to iphone and AT&T.

Is there ANY way to get music from my mac (running latest version of mac os) to this galaxy note 5?

I'm a little confused. Your note 5 is on what Android version? We are currently on 7.0.

It says version 2.0.1. According to it's built in update tool, it is currently up to date. Phone is not even a year old.

Every sync app I've downloaded to my mac requires 2.1 or higher and won't recognize this phone. I've tried over a dozen.

When I try android file transfer is gives me this error:

"If your device's screen is locked, disconnect its USB cable, unlock your screen, and then reconnect the USB cable."

Even though screen is not locked.

Are you sure you mean Android version 2.0.1, not a "software version" (which might refer to Verizon's build numbering scheme and be nothing to do with the Android version)?

The Note 5 was released last year, originally running Android 5.1. Android 2.0 was a 2009 operating system, and there is no way that anyone has produced 2.0 for the Note 5. So there is something wrong here.

Look at Settings/About/Android Version.

As @Hadron says, Android 2.0.x was released way back in Oct 2009 and predates even the original Galaxy Note by some 18mths. :)

Must be verizon's junk version... but regardless, this phone will not be recognized by either of my macbooks... I've tried over a dozen programs including android file sync. Obviously tried numerous cables, different USB ports, some 3.0, some 2.0, etc...

Google searches show countless people with same issue... and verizon seems to be manipulating google searches to point to their useless website. Man I can't wait to dump verizon and this phone.

Most unsatisfactory phone purchase in my life. I'd rather go back to my first generation nextel.

I found this link buried way deep and further re-enforces my suspicion that this is verizon at work behind the scenes intentionally designing their software load like this. Of course, this wouldn't have anything to do with the fact that they sell music now would it? /rollseyes

Oh well, only need to suffer verizon and this phone for 3 more months.

So I can try connecting to my ubuntu vm I use for work... but how do I revert from selecting the option to remember the decision to connect my device to mac and not linux? I used to be prompted for this but last time I checked the box to remember this decision.. Now I can't find where to undo this and see if I can do this in linux.

Well actually the problem I think I'm running into is verizon/samsung, in bed together, have disabled the mode that allows this phone to be mounted and managed like a USB storage device. I forget the term for this mode, I've lost the link I stumbled onto. (not surprised since verizon sells music now, I can see how this "bug" would be financially beneficial to them)\

So I don't think this will work in linux either.

you are off on the wrong foot to be blaming Verizon for this...
been with them for 25 plus years, and never any complaints.

and as others have said, you are vastly confused as to what version of Android is on that phone.
Borrow a Windows PC and update it correctly.... or do the Linux Live CD.

I gave up on anything Apple for PCs years ago, back in 1983 when they pissed me off and wanted more money for a memory card than I could buy a complete 386 Intel PC.... never again, will I look at anything Apple

Your Mac has a card reader slot? It's what I used when I wanted to transfer large a amount of music from a Mac into a new Samsung Note 7 and micro-SD. :thumbsupdroid:

If you're trying to use Android File Transfer via USB. I've never got that to work satisfactorily or reliably with Samsung devices. Lenovo or Oppo phones and a Mac, no problem.

1. You need Samsung Drivers. You can get this to install using Samsung's SmartSwitch program for Mac.
2. Using Samsung SideSync you can wirelessly access your phone files on your Mac.
3. Just to get the obvious out, when you plug in your phone, have you tried unlocking it? The phones can't be access if locked.
4. Another obvious but often overlooked thing: when you plug in your phone, pull down the notification bar and change connection mode from charge to MTP.

I'm still not sure the OP is talking about the OS. I'm not familiar with Verizon phones but I think he is looking at some kind of Verizon software that he wants to update.

Verizon locks your smartphone if You are under contract; that's why the company locks it. The 2.0 Version is the Verizon Crap loaded onto your smartphone.

Before Connecting to the Mac or Linux, try Enabling the USB Debugging mode on your smartphone. For that, you may need to enable the Developer Settings by Tapping on the Build Number for five times. Try it.
