How to use android while charging

Every time I plug my new phone in, the screen freezes and I can't use the phone unless I unplug it. Is this normal for the android motorola or is there a setting I can change?

Welcome to Android Forums!

You'd be best to ask that question in the forum for your specific phone model. Both my Nexus One and Galaxy S phones work just fine while plugged in, so maybe it's a Motorola thing.

I've seen several people on forums say htcs are picky about not wanting to be plugged into a cheap off brand charger and the touch sensing of the screen goes dead or is wonky (actual screen still lit up though) maybe motos do it too.

I have had a HTC Eris, Moto Droid, Moto Droid X, HTC MyTouch 4G, and a Nexus S and I haven't ever had that problem. There isn't any settings that would cause that problem. What phone do you have?

I have never seen any phone have that problem. Maybe you got a defective phone and need to replace it?

It is a real problem, its caused by too much heat when charging your phone and using it over an extended period of time.

Happens to my Nexus One sometimes.

If you're rooted, try using set cpu app to lower processor speed when charging, that should help some.

I've a mate who's DHD goes crazy if he charges using the cheap charger he bought on Amazon.

Op, have you tried a different charger? If it's the same with another charger, I'd say you need to take the phone in to be looked at.

Thanks for the info - my phone is a Motorola ATRIX 4G model number MB860. The at&t place said I could use my blackberry charger for this new phone as they have the same port. The charger is not a cheap one, but maybe it isn't compatible with it. I noticed it won't work when it is attached to the car charger either. The push button on top works and will bring up the menu when pushed but I cannot select an option until I unplug the phone. Sounds like I will have to take it in.

You have to be careful when using non-vendor chargers. Ensure that the voltage / current rating of the charger matches the device. Current can vary by a little, but you really need a good match when it comes to voltage rating.

Blackberries trickle charge or charge at weird voltages I believe. If I try to use a blackberry charger, it takes double the time to charge. Same with an in car charger. Does it do it when you use the specific Atrix charger?

My HTC Evo3D does this when I use the non-HTC charger. I doubt it is a heat issue, as it happens immediately after I plug it in.

huh weird, I have bunches of blackberry (factory) chargers from work and I use them more often than my htc charger without a problem.

Mine are all .75A instead of 1A like most android charger but they seem to follow the same standard as android for a >500ma pinout, cause I do get all of that 750ma and not 500ma like I would from a PC or a 1A iphone charger.

Sounds like you got the help you needed. I have a Droid X and on certain non-motorola chargers it freezes. I have a bb charger and it works fine but I have one that I purchased off eBay that freezes my phone. Get another motor cable and you're good. Also, what about the charger that came with your phone? It works fine doesn't it?

May be a different issue to yours, but when I was on 2.1 I experienced this, had trouble unlocking or cancelling alarms when plugged in, so I updated the firmware & it's now gone.

I read somewhere that, even though I get a notification to un-plug when it's fully charged, it's okay to leave my phone on the charger indinitely without hurting anything. My phone stays on the charger, as I use it, unless I need to go somewhere. I wonder, in the end, if overall battery life is better or worse.
(Battery staying at 100% compared to drain/charge/drain/charge). Any thoughts?

Not yet but it seems to be the consensus of what the problem is. I am surprised the at&t technician said it would be ok to use my old charger. Thanks for the help

My phone didn't come with a charger - huh, I didn't even think about that. All my previous phones came with a charger. I'll have to go back to the store for sure
