How to use Cyanogen Mod

Hi guys,

I'm new to rooting and have just spent the last 2 hours rooting my phone and supposedly downloading Cyanogen Mod. Now in all honesty i have no idea what i'm doing.

I've downloaded ROM manager and as far as i know i have installed Cyanogen mod, but how do i use it?

I've read guides on rooting and downloading CM7, but i can't find it anywhere, am i just being really stupid? Can't find any guides on actually using the thing!

Cheers

Thanks. That kinda explains what i need to do but not really grasping the whole concept. I've rooted my phone and downloaded the ROM Manager and downloaded CM7.. but still not sure on where to go from there. A little confused

A good place to start would be go to the market and search cm7 themes. When you find one you like download then go to theme chooser in your app draw to instal it. And as ironass mentioned have a play with your settings to see what you can do. Personally i'm just making it up as I go. The way I see it is if a button wasn't meant to be pressed it wouldn't be there in the first place.

For something that seems still to have quite a number of problems, why install it?
Can someone explain to me what the big deal is with CM7?
What are its advantages? What makes it so different as it always seems to create a big stir.

To be honest curiosity got the better of me this time. I know there have been a couple of problems, but I haven't encountered one yet that couldn't be sorted. Change that, TV out can't be fixed yet and i'm not holding my breath for that. I would say that I've encountered more problems with some fully functional roms so considering its still work in progress its pretty impressive. Personally I think its up there with villain and revolution on speed and performance. It also comes with a stupid amount of settings and tweaks (half of which I have no idea what they do), like jkay plus some. Its also easy to customise the look as there are loads of themes on the market.

Whaaaaaaaat? This is heresy in an ATR sub-forum! Why install it? 'Cos it's there and you can, of course. :D

CyanogenMod has been developing ROMs for Android devices since the G1 days, so their experience is unparalleled. Couple that with the fact that just about every other dev commits fixes/patches/optimisations to the CM codebase and you end up at the cutting-edge of Android.

The G1 ROMS were nothing short of *awesome*

CM use there own code as apposed to basing their rom on stock. So the roms are built up from scratch.
I used CM7 for a while on the Desire but I think MIUI is much better (based on CM so you get the benifits of CM with a much nicer UI)
Its been announced that MIUI will be officially releasing a rom for the SGS2 in the next month or so. This will be a good one to look out for!
