Root How to use Eris as a development phone

So I upgraded from and Eris to a Droid X, but I want to keep my eris as a development phone. However, a while back I reset the phone, and now, since I don't have the Eris registered with verizon, I don't want to "Activate" it. However, since I have reset it, when I boot, this is the setup wizard wont let me get past this step without completing it. Is there any way around this?

Root it, and install something like the Vanilla 2.0.4 ROM, which is vanilla AOSP Eclair.

Got it. Had to hit "Activate", "End Call", "Try Again", "End Call", and keep ending the call a few times before it figured out I didn't want to activate it...no on to putting Froyo on this thing!
