Howdy..! (interested in a tethering ap)

I was referred here by a fella' at the sprint store. He told me that I could find a tethering program (ap) for my desktop and new phone that would let me experience 3G speeds before committing to their monthly "hot spot" plan.

I am completely new to all of this, so could someone please point me in the right direction and walk me through the process if necessary..?

I have an LG optimus through sprint.

Thanks..! :D

There's an app called "Wireless Tether" but you have to be rooted.

Welcome!

Welcome!

And then there is free 'PDAnet', in the market, for which you don't have to be rooted.
Be aware, though, that data downloaded over 3G (internetting using your phone connection) will count against your data plan*. That can add up very fast, in my experience.
Not so if you do it over a WiFi connection.

Welcome too!

Phone service providers typically apply a socalled 'fair use policy' when you have an 'unlimited data plan'. I.o.w. it's not unlimited at all! And the definitions of what constitutes 'fair use' have shrunk alarmingly in the past couple years. I very much doubt whether there will still be any such thing as an 'unlimited data plan' in 3 years time.

Thanks guys, I am really in the dark here and it doesn't surprise me about the "unlimited" data plan being less than unlimited. I was one of those Blackberry PAM sprint customers who got the shiv a couple years ago.

I down loaded both PDA.net and Easy Tether and couldn't get either one to work. I had PDA installed on my phone but couldn't get it to install on my PC. Each time I tried it said it couldn't locate the driver even though it was on my desk top. Then it would uninstall by itself..!

Easy Tether would install on both my phone and PC, and it was clear that they were there and functioning. I followed the instructions but couldn't get a signal.

I have no idea what I could have missed.

I will be moving to an HTC Desire HD shortly and this is also something that interests me. I currently use Mobile WiFi Router on my HTC Touch Pro 2 and would like a similar app for Android. I don't want my carrier nailing me on the tethering via normal methods (USB).

Does a WiFi router app exist for Android?

I think sprint has completely neutered my phone, which is why I am having trouble getting these tethering programs to work. It's the only thing that makes sense because the instructions I am following for Easy Tether seem to be too simple to screw up. And since everything goes as planned except for it not working in the end, I can't see any other explanation.

you should look and post if you don't see any other threads in the lg optimus section. They should be able to offer device help.
