Help howto backup handset

These sorts of things should be backed up to the google account associated with your handset anyway.
Via a PC, if you go to the gmail account you have linked to the phone, click on contacts, do you see a list of the numbers etc you have on your phone? Also, if you check the Android Market website, log in with your google details, then select My Market Account from the top right of the page, you should see a list of the apps you've downloaded.
