Root HowTo - My Guide To Rooting and Romming (Beginner)

ok, me again, i am slowly working thru all these. i followed the instructions to a tee, got past my last errror and actually got to the recovery boot screen, selected the lfy.zip file and as far as i can tell (because it said installation successful) it installed. so i go back and reboot...... same dam thing i had b4, no liquid froyo just my same old fone. what the heck am i doing wrong?

Did you install a theme? Stock LFY will look much like stock Froyo until you install a theme. You can go to Settings --> About Phone and scroll to the bottom and under "Build Number' it should say "Liquid Frozen Yogurt"

OK. I've done all up through "successfully flahsed ClockworkMod Recovery." Did a couple of things wrong here and there, but went backk and figured out my errors and am now here. Heart thumping. (Maybe too much Coke Zero.) Rebooting into recovery...

I've gone through Steps 1-3. Was in the process of downloading LFY when I noticed that my sdcard directory is "empty." ??? please help!! Was it erased somehow??

Edit: never mind. Figured it out. Was connected to my computer in USB storage mode. sdcard is fine.

Yuppers, same exact way. Boot into recovery install that bad boy and enjoy. Which one you goin with? I have smoked and love it!!!!

wanted to go with watermark but the link to it is no good, so i may go blueberry cause it looks somewhat like it

installed the blueberry theme, now the phone just keeps rebooting over and over and over. then when it stops, as soon as you touch a button, it reboots again.

Sometimes it takes a few tries for reasons i do not know. Try wiping again and installing the rom again. Once again, both are v1.4, correct?

yup, just went and checked, both are 1.4, doing this again is going to be extremely difficult, i get 50 to 100 errors and then it reboots and starts all over again.

i will let you know if it works

well its pretty screwed up now

installing the bluberry theme has disabled my wifi and 3g so clockwork wont flash since there is no internet connection. to do anything on the phone is like i have a pop up virus. hundreds of error messages that have to be cliqed so i can move on. when i finally get to clockwork and get it to reboot, it reboots to the android reboot so i cant install anything. i am at a loss what to do now.

i checked and liquid froyo is ver 1.4 as is the theme so i dont know what is wrong.

anyone have any emergency procedures i can follow?

OK, 2.5 hours later, I have rooted (way easy, took less than 10 minutes), installed a wifi tether and successfully hooked up my wifi iPad to the internet (also easy, but had to disable a feature to get it to work with 2.2; used "help" feature on tether app to figure that out). Downloaded LFY and installed it -- confirmed it is installed.

My apps are now all downloading at once through the Market and there are many so this will take a while.

I had a few trips and stumbles along the way, and I learned a ton. I will separately post my "traps for the unwary newbies" shortly. Overall, this was relatively painless, but I'm glad I had enough time set aside.

There has been numerous people who've had problems with losing clockwork when using easy root. But if you have android recovery you should be able to flash an unrooted zip and be fine then try easy root again. Let me try and find one.

I was a timid noob at the outset of the process, but I made it through successfully and highly recommend it. Thanks SO MUCH for this thread!!! Here are a few things I learned along the way --

START OUT BACKED UP: I was very happy I was all backed up when I started, both with MyBackup Pro and AppBrain. Took no time at all to get everything back in order after I flashed a new ROM (which required a wipe).

MAKE SURE YOU REBOOT AFTER ROOTING: The rooting won't take effect until you do apparently. If you go straight to trying to flash ClockworkMod Recovery after rooting without rebooting, you'll get a permission error message.

IF AT FIRST YOU DON'T SUCCEED... FLASH AGAIN: I successfully flashed ClockworkMod Recovery using ROM Manager -- or so I thought. When I tried to install a custom ROM, it would not take me into the proper recovery mode; kept doing stock mode recovery (triangle with exclamation mark). If this happens to you, flash again in ROM Manager and then try again to install the custom ROM using ROM Manager. The instructions at the start of this thread do mention this, but it didn't sink in until it happened to me, so I think it bears repeating.

BE PATIENT AND EXPECT STUMBLES: Although this is easy, it requires careful attention, patience, and plenty of time. Don't expect as a first-timer to breeze through this process in under a half hour. I'd set aside 2 hours to do it and restore everything, to be safe.

IT IS SO WORTH IT! As I reload some of my apps, I'm finding that some have "superuser" special features available only to those with rooted phones. Cool. And the free wifi tether, alone, is worth all of this, even if you never flash a custom ROM.

I just want to thank everyone in this thread, especially emverham. You guys have opened my eye! I stumbled, got back up(thanks to Rom manager) and all is well!

Flash the theme the same way you did the rom through recovery. Voila!!!!

I can't download the theme, it says it is not supported. I have the original droid and the rom i am using is liquid froyo...? I can't wait to say voila!
I must say everything so far is smooth, it is the customization i am having trouble with
