Howto root/flash roms

Forgive me if this is the wrong subforum this is my first post.

I just ordered a Samsung Galaxy S2 International version and I wish to know the software and steps I will need to take to flash it to Cyanogen 7.1

Also do i need to root it first?
 
I bricked my phone, please help!

I installed clockworkmod, worked fine.

I moved the googleapps and CM 7.1 zips to my microSD card, im sure they are there, i checked on 4 different PC's with card readers and all both zip's are 100% on the SD card.

BUT the clockwork mod refuses to see the zips, i try and load zip and it is not on the sd card according to clockwork mod, now my phone is stuck in some kind of reboot loop and seems to have no firmware on it. what do i do now?
 
your cwm is probably looking at the internal storage.
there will be an option to install the zip from elsewhere. CWM5 default is external sd card, but if you on CWM4, the default is the internal storage so you will have to select the the external card specifically.
 
I tried that, i looked at every option available from the list including the external usb and external SD, it says no files when those options are selected. But as soon as i pull the sd card and stick it into a pc the files are right there in the root directory.

I have returned the phone and ordered another as for some reason now it is in a state where it wont even turn on, power button does nothing.
