Hi folks, i recently bought a hp slate 17 which is a large android 4.4.4 tablet. there is no option to change orientation in the settings. none of the apps in the app store for controling screen rotation work. i read some amazon reviews which say that hp have locked down this feature in the firmware.

does anyone know how i might go about enabling screen rotation?

Thanks

If it isn't in the stock settings and apps don't work (dont know why though) then your only hope is a custom rom if you can find one for it. Sorry..
I really don't know why a tab wouldn't have that feature though..
Have you tried pulling down the quick settings for a toggle?

What orientation is it locked in?

Its locked in landscape it seems hp dont really intend this to be rotated perhaps because of its size they think of it more as a desktop but it is portable and light and i want to use it in portait sadly no there is no screen rotation option in the quick settings or any where else.
i guess i will have to look into the rom.

will rooting the device help uncover the missing screen rotation option?

thanks.

Not necessarily rooting it but flashing a rom with screen rotation included would work but there's no guarantee apps will play nicely with it

I have the same problem with my Android TV, Minix Neo X8H Plus. Some apps require you to rotate the screen to get to additional functions, and I am unable to get out of landscape, neither are there any apps or settings that fix this.
:(

If you lay the tablet flat on a flat surface (ex..table) and you start an app that rotates the screen to portrait it will work. For example the app NFL Kicker will rotate the screen to portrait and after closing the app some another apps will automatically use the new orientation. Ebook Droid will rotate books. That is actually pretty cool. But the tablet must remain nearly flat. I can read books in the portrait view by holding the tablet on my lap and raising it just a bit. None of the rotation apps from the Play Store have worked for me.

Also, I cannot get a PC to recognize this tablet via USB. As a result I can't root it. Does anyone have any info on a root for a HP Slate 17?
