HTC Aria Cracked Screen

It's $100 through HTC, so it's pretty close to an arm and a leg (if you paid nothing for it like I did), but considering that replacing it yourself would cost about that much, it's a pretty good option. Any reason why ATT won't replace it?
 
I am so glad i found this thread! I was looking at this phone for my first Android device. Now I'm thinking hmmm maybe not. I love the small size of the phone and everything else about it got great reviews. But this is a big negative. I understand things happen and yeah, screens may crack. But this one seems like its a lot easier then most phones.

I'm not a fan of the iphone which is why I bought the Aria as a personal phone. When my contract is up looks like i'm heading for a dual iphone.

Still haven't decided if I want to repair it yet.

Well I read the threads where there were problems after the self-repairs of the screens. I decided to have HTC repair the screen, cost me $100.00 and had the phone back in about 7 days.
 
Daughter dropped her phone and cracked the screen. After evaluating the cost and my own surgical skills, I decided to let the experts do it. Mailed phone from Pa to St. Louis on a Monday and had fixed phone back by next Tuesday. All for $95 and that seems great cuz didn't see digitized alone for less than $70. Oh, paid one way shipping too for $6. So for $100 have new phone with no probs. Here's the link I used

I called first to make sure got a live voice and people very friendly. Also sent lots of progress emails and tracked back to my door with ups. Hearing horror stories about earpieces, tools, sensors etc. I'm really happy went this route!
 
I recently replaced my digitizer for my Aria and I too had a problem with the earpiece being responsive. I realized I could solve this problem by putting in the little rubber item back over top of the ear piece (so it is pushed down when it is assembled), but when I did this, I saw that the adhesive on my phone was not strong enough to hold the screen firmly to the phone. After some tinkering, I just tore a small piece of paper, folded it in half once, and placed it on top of the ear piece. As a result, my screen does not pop out any more and my ear piece works without me having to squeeze my phone.

On a different note, I am having problems with my bottom four hotkeys (the home, menu, back and search buttons) illuminating. I do not think it is an issue with my ambient light sensor because my display turns on and off when I take my phone to and from my ear. I am stumped as to why they are not turning on in dim or dark rooms. It may be worth noting that I did not buy a stock digitizer (I thought I was, but it turned out to be slightly different). The only difference between the stock and my digitizer is that the HTC logo is in the center and there is no ATT logo on the right. I would not think this is the cause of the problem, but you never know.

This is a really tricky repair. Don't forget those two philllips screws that hold the plate behind the LCD. (The plate you have to pry up to disconnect the digitizer.

And is getting that threaded back in and clicked in frustrating or what?

Not to mention you need a tri-Y driver tool to do it.
 
yeah i don't have a tendency to drop phones either, but the drop was literally three feet from the ground. i've had numerous phones & have dropped them & nothing has ever happened. i had this phone for less than a month & the htc warranty doesn't cover physical damage. so now i'm debating if i should send the phone in to htc for a repair, but its $100. has anyone done this? if so details!
 
Wondering if anyone here can help - I broke my screen but the phone was still usable for several months (thanks to some packing tape). I ordered a new digitizer from eBay this month, followed the replacement directions someone posted in this thread. Everyone went OK, other than snapping in two a piece of the plastic that sits on the top section of the phone, near where the power button lies. Screwed back together fine. Powered on momentarily to a Boot Screen of some sort, then seemed to turn on fine. But the digitizer is not working - no touch response. I disconnected and reconnected the digitizer pins several times, no dice. I tried putting my old cracked screen back on to see if I just received a faulty digitizer from eBay, but now the old one doesn't work either. Everything else on the phone appears to work fine, power on sounds plays, shows that I have service, and calls ring through, but I can't use the phone at all with no touch support. Did I break something on the phone during the repairs? Any way to fix this??? I really cannot afford to buy a new phone.
 
I have run into an issue I'm not sure about. The screen doesn't stick to the digitizer. I see packaged with the screen some kind of film. Thought this seems to be a double sided adhesive it's a bit larger then the screen. So what am I to do? Is this the part that adheres the digitizer to the new screen? How do I use it? Have others seen the same thing?
 
I recently replaced my screen, and had a few questions (some of which have been asked here). First off, I bought this digitizer kit off of ebay (Touch Screen Digitizer AT&T HTC Aria Replacement &tool | eBay) and I'm very pleased, the pry tool was a bit useless but other than that it was good parts. If anyone could suggest some adhesive to apply to the back of the screen? It doesnt sit tight enough for the optical thing to be flush. Anyways, the first time I put it back together I realized I couldnt hear anything when I made a call, then looked at my old digitizer and the internal speaker was stuck to it.. ok, put it back in and its fixed? Wrong.. so now I don't know what to do, I might just not be making a solid connection to the pins, or is there a known problem with this? I took it apart and put it back together 3 times, it was enough for one night so I'm going to mess with it later. if anyone knows if they somehow break or something let me know, and good luck to you all! BUY A CASE!
 
Hi everyone,

I dropped my aria a couple times before and had three chipped corners...then one last drop and the whole thing shattered. I think I got lucky based on some posts here.

So, unwillingly to pay exorbitant amounts, I opted to buy a replacement digitizer on ebay for $35. It came within 2 days because it was in the US and had the logos and everything. It took me a couple hours but I got it done with some patience and slow movements.

Here are a couple tips regarding issues people come across:

SPEAKER ISSUES: I had this issue the first time I put the phone back together so I took it apart again and found that the piece needs to be slid into place at an angle to make the best connection between the prongs and the receptor spaces.

BLEEDING LIGHT INTO LCD AND UNDER SELECTION BUTTONS:
Came across this problem too but it's a simple fix. On the old digitizer you will find 2 pieces of black electrical looking tape and a white plastic piece held on by two little pieces of sticky. Carefully remove these and place them on your new digitizer and all will be fine! Take a picture if your not sure if you'll remember how to put them back on in the same place.

PROXIMITY SENSOR: Well I didn't have this problem when I put the phone back together because I was aware of it when I started but I see how some people would have this issue. There is a little black rubber piece that fits around the sensor in the top right corner. This piece has a thicker side when you look at it. That thick side should be placed as the bottom piece of the proximity sensor cover. Otherwise, it will partially block it.

Lastly, you may have some bleeding light that can be seen around the very edges on the digitizer where it meets the case. If that's the case, you'll need new foam, like me. Also, when I was lifting the broken screen away from the case at first, the foam was seperating from the lcd so the lcd stayed in place, but you still need to lift it out to get to the metal plate to replace the digitizer cable thingy.

I also had a cracked digitizer. I actually cracked in back in November, but the phone had been working fine until recently. I purchased a $35 replacement on ebay. The new digitizer has been working fine, but I have been having trouble with the speaker and with the screen going blank during calls. After opening the phone probably 10 times, it finally seems that things are working well.

Speaker issue: I was trying to place the speaker earpiece in the same orientation that I saw in the repairsuniverse video, look at 3:32

In the video, it appears that the thicker border of the earpiece should be on the upper side.However, when I put in the earpiece this way it didn't work. After multiple attempts I tried flipping it over, with the thicker border on the bottom side. It's now working fine.

Screen going black/proxmitiy sensor issue: I placed a piece of black electrical tape on the lcd screen, just behind the at&t logo of the digitizer. Problem fixed.

good luck to those of you attempting this repair, ive never tried anything like this before and I found it pretty tough. I found a pair of tweezers to be a very useful tool during the process.
 
hey guys,
a couple weeks ago i dropped my htc aria (not even from a great height or anything, but it hit the corner) and the screen broke. so having a bit of experience from taking apart my previous samsung f480 phone (i broke the LED screen) i decided to order a digitizer for my aria.
i replaced my screen but whenever the 4 buttons at the bottom light up, i could see the light on my screen. my dad became frustrated so he took the phone apart several times in order to try adjust the little white piece of paper so that it wouldnt light up. and im not sure why, but last night i plugged my phone in to charge and not too long later it became touch unresponsive and im not sure why. is there any way that i can fix my phone? i really want to be able to use it again, or at least save all my messages to gmail..

if it helps, i replaced my screen with an at&t digitizer..but if there are any other questions about what i did before my phone became unresponsive i wouldnt mind answering it. thank you! :)

by the way, my phone is completely unresponsive. i cant even slide down to unlock my phone..

Well if you look back a page or so ago, I too replaced my dig. We have 2 of these phones in our household. Unfortunatly both have broken twice :eek: I know you have spent some money for your phone, but you may just want to swallow your dollar and have HTC repair it:( I finally did this, after spending a few hundred trying to fix these on my own. On a good note, HTC does an excellent job on the repair work.

It sounds like the light bar was loosened (at its connection) and you may not have the cable to the screen connected right, or even a pin may have been bent or broken in the attempt to fix.

Sorry for this bad news, but these phones are tough to work with, this is one of the reasons it had such a short life cycle with HTC.

Any idea on what that little rubber part is called so that I can order it? Mine lost it when my digitizer shattered in that corner.
 
I've had my Aria for about 15 months and really liked it, i dropped it in the drive way and cracked the screen. It still worked but I couldn't really read emails so I looked into fixing it. I bought the screen and a couple of tools to take it apart ($45 with shipping), watched the videos at Repair Universe and off i went. Apart and back again in about an hour. Now the screen works, but I can't turn the phone on. (I know the screen works because when I plug it in it charges and the green battery comes on). I have taken it apart about three more times but can't seem to figure out what I might have done to it. Any ideas ?

Be careful about taking these phones apart...
 
If everything is coming on but the screen isn't it sounds like its one of 2 things. You either haven't connected the LCD screen back up fully, or sadly you have damaged it during the repair.

We recommend checking over the connections first as this is the most likely cause.
