Root HTC contact sync/phone w/Vanilla

I spent some time searching but was unable to come up with a recent answer-

I really like vanilla android but not having something akin to HTC's contact sync(photos, facebook numbers) and phone(t9 dialing) I am unable to stick with it.

Anyone know if someones managed to make a suitable merge?

I believe there is an app in the market that will sync your contact photos to facebook.

Unless I'm missing the question, doesn't the facebook app for Android do this? I'm running vanilla android and some contacts were automatically merged with facebook contacts, others I had to do manually, but in the end, their FB data and contact data exist side-by-side within a single contact, FB picture, too.
