Ive finally got round to getting a HTC desire. Its locked to network 3 and has the 3 firmware on it. I want to uncock it and flash it with generic firmware. How can I do this? I need pointing ijn the right direction of a tutorial. Thanks in advance guys

Hello bigcol. I placed your question in the HTC Desire forum where more users of that device might respond.

First you need to root:

Droid Den - Phone Guide: How To Root The HTC Desire HBOOT 0.83 - Droid Den

((*** NOTE - the above link suites Bootloader 0.83 or below...follow the instructions to check your bootloader version and follow the appropriate link!***))

Then you need to flash your new ROM:

Droid Den - Phone Guide: How To Install Rooted Android 2.2 On Your HTC Desire - Droid Den

These guides have been done really well. I've followed them myself and they've worked a treat! All the best.

I agree you do not need to root to get froyo just follow the link that danfrance gave you and you will be fine, I think rooting is not as special as everyone says it is, I had a Nexus one that I rooted and really did not care for it at all, the so called special roms were not all that special. I will not root my Desire because I am getting exactly what I want from the stock Ruu's that are posted in this forum!!!

I couldn't not root. I could never go back to stock, then that's because as nice as sense looks, I find it buggy and resource hungry. I love vanilla android

If you think that sense is a resource hog then you should try Cyanogen Mod, that is what I used on my Nexus one when I rooted it and the battery lasted less than eight hours because the Rom sucked the battery dry and I tried to disable everything I could in it and it still was a worthless rom!!!

I am getting around twelve to fourteen hours of battery life on my Desire and that is with the Wifi and the GPS enabled all the time and my e-mail checking every hour!!!
I think that the stock Htc Ruu is a great rom and I have had no problems at all with my phone.

As for rooting I think that is simply a personal thing and wheather or not you want to try different Roms which I do not!!!

Let me know how it goes as I am in the same boat as you, locked and branded. I am really nervous about screwing up my phone, so figure let someone else have a go first :)

These phones are almost Bullet Proof, you would have to really do something bad to mess up the phone, if you just take your time and read everything through first you will do just fine, I know that it is nerve racking at first but as you go along it gets easy to do, plus there are so many people on here that you can turn to for help it makes it simple to do.

GIVE it a try I will bet that you will do just fine with it!!!:D

Possibly a dodgy kernel. I am on defrost which is based on cyanogen. Gmail push, Facebook sync, overclocked, heavy use (mainly web) and it lasts me to bed time unless I'm downloading a lot of files.

Granted, I turn WiFi off when not using it.

Got to say, best battery life I've had

Thanks for the replies guys, its very much appreciated. I would have added this reply earluer but Ive just got in from work. I do want to root my Desire because I want to jailbreak my ps3 and from what I've read on the internet, I need a rooted phone. I'll sort my new phone out first before I even think about the ps3. I will l follow the tutorial that has been posted in the replies to this post. Ive taken a look at it and its seems straight forward.

Ok done and done, my phone is now unbranded and running the very latest Froyo HTC has to offer. The phone was rooted and now it isn't so happy with that. Went really, really easy and only took a few minutes to do. I need to re-install a few bits of software but all looks to have Sync'd back up great.

I forgot to say I already had Gold card made and that I updated with no Sim card in as read that it sometimes Sim locked if left in.

Thanks

Steve
