htc desire 2nd advert???

Just to be clear, these are not actually ads. They are meant as "features" that give more information on the phone you're reading about - pulled from our phone guide over on Phandroid. I know there is a buy button but, it's actually just meant to try to tie together features across AF and Phandroid..
If that is not an ad, and is meant to be informative, then why not put at a sub-forum level? Why should that "thing" appear at the end of each topic washing our brains again and again?

I hate to say it phases, but thats part definition of what an advert is lol...to give the reader more information...

but im not gonna be picky an argue ;):D im just glad they are correct now...I could care where you stick em, could stick one to my forehead :D

actually.....can I get free stuff if I had that on my forehead? :D:p

I mean it's not an ad in the traditional sense - from an ad network - directly driving revenue with views or click counts. Stickler.

:P

..I think it's at the thread level because it's target audience is mainly people who find their ways onto threads from searches they make on Google about a device - which is the large percentage of our traffic.

Rob tells me he's not closed to the idea of only showing it to guests.. rather, people not logged in.. if it's too annoying for our members.

+2 :D I think this would be for the best. Maybe have it so that it's there for the first 50 posts for new members? So that they have direct info to go to. But for us oldies, we basically know our device inside and out ;)

Word. Guests and new members (maybe similar to how we have that sig restriction - 25 posts).

Wanted to chime in here folks. First of all, these aren't really intended to be ads. In fact, just the opposite- it's supposed to be USEFUL information. Our line of thinking:

(1) People browse a thread and perhaps want more information on the phone they're browsing. After they're done reading the thread, info is right there for them.

(2) We want our "Best Phones" section to reflect the actual best phones, so we've made it easy for more people to vote in more places.

(3) We now allow people to sign up for instant e-mail notification for phones that aren't yet available. If they're interested enough to be at the forum they might want that info about it being on sale. We accomplish that in this area.

(4) TONS of our visitors come from web searches. These people are especially likely to read a thread, not find all the information they need, and desire (pun intended) some direction on where they can get more info.

This being said, having terribly incorrect info is a bad thing. We're launching a new section of the site tomorrow called "Best Apps" and once this is launched, we'll be refocusing a bunch of our energy on getting the phone guide up to date, launching the tablet section, and then ensuring each is maintained properly. It's the getting behind thing which has hurt us before.

If the vast majority of members absolutely hate this with a passion, we can remove it. Afterall, it's initial purpose was to be helpful and facilitate more activity and feedback on phones.

I think that it can still be helpful. The issue here is its appealing to the wrong audience. As brought up earlier, most of us already know almost everything about our own phones - so when we see it, it just becomes redundant and a nuisance. It compounds the problem when these same people are regular members who post on a constant basis (thus see something they already know every time they have to post). But if this can strictly appeal to the new members, then you find the perfect balance. New members or people who aren't registered, who are thinking about purchasing the phone, would be able to see it and gather info. They are the ones that can find this information to be valuable.

What someone said earlier about showing this to non-members and new members is basically the best way to handle it

Rob has had the feature temporarily removed until we get the database up to date, at which point he'll consider the suggestions/options.

Thanks

I dont mind it now its correct. Its not like it gets in the way or anything. As long as the information is maintained, I can see its uses.
