Root HTC Desire - back to stock, RUU & ROMS

Hi chaps,

I have just rooted my htc desire (simfree uk no branding etc) using unrevoked and all went fine.

If I want to go back to stock (for repair etc) do I just pick an RUU from the link in "danfrances" sig if so which one would I pick?

My phone details are as follows:

BUILD NUMBER

RADIO

Or could I just use my original back up when I first rooted (which will obviously include the rooted details) but then unroot?

Also I have used astro to back up my apps, what about system stuff i.e. email details sms history etc so that when I load a new rom I can load everything back as it was.

And finally the rom I want needs to have the htc sense and the ability to move programmes to the sd card I am assuming leedroid is the one to use?

To unroot you need to run an RUU, so no need to revert to the original backup before doing that. Since your software version is 2.29.405.5 and radio 32.49.00.32U_5.11.05.27 I'd guess the RUU which includes those 2 strings in its name would be a good choice :) That one's a WWE (World-Wide English), so an unbranded HTC release.

I'm sure it's in Dan's FAQ, but Titanium Backup is good for apps and data. I use MyBackup Pro for SMS/MMS/Call logs (there's a free 30 day trial version). System settings don't usually copy well between ROMs (translation: can cause problems if you restore them!), so there's always a little bit of setting up to do.

Regaridng the RUU I kind of guest to match up but wanted some one else to confirm as well :D

Well let me explain that I've never actually used an RUU - it's just a "last resort" option which I hope I never have to use!

One thing that's worth mentioning: the RUU should be about 165-170 MB in size. If the download is a lot smaller, something's gone wrong. I found the "test our new server" link from the shipped ROMs page (the page you get after selecting an RUU) worked for me after the default download failed part way through.
 
There's nothing wrong with having to use an RUU, I do it usually once a month as I get bored of custom ROMs. Takes about 5 minutes to setup after as I only use about 6 apps
 
What's the actual procedure to use once you have the RUU, is it just a case of connecting the USB cable, launching HTC Sync and double clicking the RUU file?
 
Pretty much yes, unless you are using a non-Sense ROM in which case the PC won't see the phone. What you'd do in this case is boot into FASTBOOT (turn the phone on whilst holding the back button) and then connect to the PC. Once it says 'FASTBOOT USB' on the phone and Windows has installed the drivers then run the RUU

Are you having problems with unrevoked finding your phone?

If you look at the Rooting guide in danfrances sig above, you will find this link unrevoked

That should be all you need.
