I haven't seen any flip cases which do not have a magnetic clasp. I've been using ones with magnetic clasps for a few months now and I've not noticed any adverse effects.

Smart phones don't use magnetic hard disk drives, nor do they have CRTs which can suffer from shadow mask magnetization. So magnetic clasps should not be a problem at all. No problems with my Krusell Orbit Flex.

Just seen this. Oh lord...

A magnet interfering with a compass? Dear gods, the Desire obeys the laws of physics!

A compass works because the needle aligns itself according to the magnetic field lines of the planet. Whilst they are colossal, they're actually pretty weak. A small rare earth magnet (Like those used in cases) creates a powerful localised magnetic field, which will inevitably overpower that of the planet at short ranges. It really can't be helped!

It's a similar thing to gravity in a way. The force exerted by the entire mass of planet earth can be utterly defeated by a fridge magnet, because gravity produces a pretty weak field over a wide (technically infinite) area, while a fridge magnet, despite being much less powerful overall, creates a very localised field and as such overpowers gravity in that particular area, holding the magnet to the door.

I have no idea if anything I said there makes sense. I tend to understand myself perfectly, but confuse the crap out of people around me no matter how hard I try. I'd make an awful teacher! :p

Magnets and high tech gadgets should never be used together. I had a Nokia N82 and the magnet thingy damaged my camera and it wouldn't focus anymore.

Yeah but how many times do you wave a magnetic around over the phone while using a compass app?

It still doesn't bother me.

The point i'm makeing is that it affects the phone. As the post above (about the camera) says the magnet can damage. The video is just a demo of how it affects certain apps. And i'm sure the magnet would be around the phone all the time if it's on your case... therefore to answer your question about how often it'd be around the compass app... every time you use it surely!!!!

Well no as the case I have has the magnet a long way from the phone when the flip part is open. The only time that the magnet is anywhere near the phone is when the case is closed and the phone is not in use.

Since it obviously bothers you so much you need to find a flip case without a magnet. Unfortunately I can't help you there as I've already stated that I haven't seen any. I suppose you could always try cutting out the magnet.

Just installed my InvisibleSHIELD, painstakingly might I add - I am one of those people who have to remove and re-apply any screen protector when there is the smallest sign of dirt, hair etc underneath it, thus it took me about 8 attempts to get it perfect.

However, I will add that the material looks durable and feels the part too. You cannot see it on the screen at all, except obviously if you look closely to find the corners to remove the shield.

Overall I would give it an 8/10 - mainly due to the difficulty I suffered installing it. Now just waiting the arrival of my CM Barely There and I will allow the Desire to leave the house... :)

As stated earlier on it can still damage the phone when it isn't in use but as you said this doesn't phase you and all is well at the mo. Let's just hope i won't have to say i told you so. Too nice a phone for me to wish that upon anyone. Lol

Sorry, was my post invisible? It's a COMPASS app. Of course the magnet is going to affect it. But that's only because compasses are extremely sensitive to magnetic fields. The field from the magnet at the distance it would be from the electronics is absolutely minuscule, and even if you stuck the magnet actually inside the phone it would probably only affect the compass and (possibly) the speaker. The risk of damaging your phone with the magnet from a flip case is essentially zero.

If you want a leather case without a magnetic lock, you'll most likely be looking at a pouch you can slip in your pocket rather than something with a belt clip, so that the case manufacturers don't get a lot of angry comments fro users complaining their phones escaped the cases. Maybe have a look at the Krusell Luna or the official HTC pouch for the Desire?

Thanks for the reply, your post wasn't invisible at all and neither was the one stating that a magnet had infact affected someone's camera to! I was informed by the worker in the orange store that the magnet can seriously damage a phone. Maybe it doesn't happen every time but even with a 1 in 100 risk i wouldn't like to be the 1

It isn't 1 in 100, or even close to it. There are countless millions of people using cases with magnetic clasps for their phones, and it's extraordinarily rare you get a problem. And to be quite frank it's just as likely not to be the magnet but that something has shaken loose inside the phone. If you're uncomfortable with it by all means use one without. But the risk is negligible.

Just to add my 2 penneth....

My HTC Hero was KILLED by a magnet!....it happened to me!! - i put it in the same pocket as my magnet badge...took it out my pocket 30 minutes later and the magnet had killed my phone....totally messed everything up...wouldnt switch off...screen kept flicking on and off, then the next day it totally gave up the ghost....ALL BECAUSE of a magnet.

I now have a Desire and boy....i am never letting it close to ANY magnet of ANY size ever again.

My advice?...DONT buy a magnet case..end of.

I didn't say you should stick your phone next to a bigger magnet. But do you really think flip cases would sell if the magnets in them were powerful enough to damage the phone? Seems unlikely to me! Having said that, mankind does have its moments.

CaseMates look nice but other than that i don't see the point. The only part it protects (from scratches only) costs less to replace than the case itself.

I wouldn't say that really, I've got a CM Tough and it covers everything but the screen which has a cover on also the case itself has raised edges around the screen so unless you're really unlucky to drop it on to a pointed object it's going to be protected.

The case itself is a 2 part job - the inner is a soft (softer than the flexiskin type) silicone and the outer is a hard rubberised plastic type which fits around it gripping it, there is no chance of this slipping off and no clips to break. Yes it does add bulk bulk but this case is exactly what it's named after, I guess the only way to protect it more would be to use a wallet/pouch type but then you'd have to open/take out everytime you want to use it, which I didn't.

Hope that helps.

DOES ANYONE KNOW A GOOD TRANSPARENT CASE?
THIS IS THE BEST ONE I COULD FIND, BUT i dont know about the quality..
