Root HTC Desire CDMA SLCD Root HELP!

Mr Derp

Newbie
Alright before I get started my phone is a HTC Desire CDMA with a 3.7-inch touch-sensitive Super TFT screen (is that SLCD?) and I have Froyo 2.2. Here is what my phone said before I used Revolutionary and UnrEVOked:

BravoC DVT2 SHIP S-ON
HBOOT - 1.06.0000
MicroP - 051e
Touch Panel - SYNT0101
Radio - 2.15.00.11.16

This is after I used Revolutionary and UnrEVOked:

-Revolutionary-
BravoC DVT2 SHIP S-OFF
HBOOT - 6.06.1002
MicroP - 051e
Touch Panel - SYNT0101
Radio - 2.15.00.11.16

So now I have S-OFF and a HBOOT version of 6.06.1002...

I first used Revolutionary and got S-OFF then I installed the UnrEVOked HBOOT drivers, then I ran UnrEVOked and when it said Done I rebooted my phone. I downloaded Titanium Backup and it said I didn't have root access , I then downloaded Root Checker Basic, and alas, it said I didn't have root access either. :( I went into HBOOT and selected recovery, it says I have ClockWorkMod recovery.

I used terminal emulator and typed "su" and it said "Permission Denied" so I have S-OFF, ClockworkMod Recovery, and a HBOOT of 6.06.1002 but no root access. I read on another thread, that you could flash a custom rom even if you don't have root if you have ClockworkMod recovery and that it would install Superuser on your phone. I didn't know if that was true or not, and I didn't want to do anything further in fear of bricking my phone.

Again, my phone is HTC Desire CDMA with a SLCD screen, and I am running Froyo 2.2. So my question is:

Will I be able to flash a custom rom with S-OFF, a HBOOT version of 6.06.1002, and ClockworkMod as a recovery, but without root?

If not, can you please tell me how I can further root my phone. Thanks.

Overview:
HTC Desire S-OFF
HBOOT 6.06.1002
ClockworkMod Recovery
No Superuser

Any help is GREATLY appreciated... :)
Thanks,
Mr Derp

I would imagine so as you have a custom recovery. See if you can do a nandroid backup in recovery first? If you can, your good to try and flash a custom rooted rom.

You don't use revolutionary and then.unrevoked. its one or the other.

If you read the documentation for revolutionary, there is a zip to flash for root

Yes, if you have a custom recovery you can flash ROMs, take nandroid backups, without rooting the current ROM.

Unrevoked won't work on software as new as you have (hboot version is too new). In fact revolutionary will have installed a custom recovery, so you didn't actually need unrevoked at all.

To root the current ROM you flash a superuser zip from the custom recovery. There's a guide to rooting with revolutionary in the All Things Root Guide sticky post, and instructions for rooting the ROM can also be found on the revolutionary site. But as shauny has said, if your intention is to flash a new ROM you don't need to do this unless you want to use Titanium Backup to back up your current apps (as that does need root).

Do read the rooting FAQ as well, linked from the same sticky post (red link in my sig).

Alright how will I do a nandroid backup?
Will I have to download something?

When I go into HBOOT and go to recovery I see ClockworkMod Recovery v2.5.0.9 at the top and some options and I see "backup and restore" as one of the options, do I click that?

Oh and HBOOT says 6.06.1002, is that anything to worry about?

Sorry for all the questions by the way, I am a total noob when it comes to these types of things. :P But I am learning, slowly... :)

yes, select backup. (use trackball to select). a nandroid backup is done in recovery and is a complete image of the phone as it were. always do this before you go flashing anything as you can easily restore your phone if things go wrong.

So I don't need root to use custom roms? Will I need root to partision my SD card? I've also been trying to find the correct rom to use... I've been wanting to use a sense 3.5 rom, but can't find a CDMA only one... The only 3.5 sense roms I can find are GSM/CDMA but I don't fully understand how to flash one of those.

Have you read the rooting faq in the sticky thread? It explains what root is. You don't.need to be an android administrator (super user / root) to partition sd cards.

It also explains how to flash roms and pretty much everything else you need to know

Please also read the root memory faq.

Alright I've read both of those, the SD Card partitioning using the computer is really complicated... So I guess I will use Rom Manager to do that. I'm going to start looking for a good sense 3.5 rom right now.

No, really, use GParted to partition the card. If you use ROM Manager you'll probably have to use GParted later anyway, so it's less effort to do it right the first time. Follow SUroot's instructions for doing it using a virtual machine, as that's probably the simplest way if you don't already have linux somewhere.

Using lesser tools you are likely to end up with one of the partitions misaligned, which will reduce card performance.

Also, have you noticed the sticky thread warning people not to use ROM Manager? That's referring to other operations rather than card partitioning, but it's worth a browse.
