Help HTC desire crashes and restarts randomly

I had the same problems with mine. Returned for repair via T-Mobile.

New motherboard and it's been 100% stable ever since with exactly the same software in use.

My wifes one has never had a problem and it was about a month newer than mine. Must have been a bad production run or something. As the IMEI can be used to calculate the approximate manufacture dates, we were from different batches.

Here's my situation.....

I'm suffering from this rebooting problem and it's becoming more and more annoying.

I'm nearing the end of my contract with T-Mobile so I will be due an upgrade in the next month or two.

The only reason I haven't sent my phone off is because it's rooted and I can't be bothered to unroot it and flash a stock ROM, only to have to reroot it upon its return.

Has anybody else sent off a rooted handset? If so, did it return with the latest stock ROM and unrooted?

Or did everybody unroot it before sending it off to HTC?

The problem is slowly doing my head in and I'm in two minds about using a HTC handset in the future.

my desire getting off &off particulrarly wen using internet plz help me,i hav to keep battery out,it may get started but it doeses the same

Taking my Desire into my local T-Mobile store tomorrow. They will send it off for repair and hopefully solve the problem.

In short, I'm not impressed with T-Mobile's handling of the situation so far.

I spoke with to customer services yesterday and I was told to take my Desire into any T-Mobile store and they would ensure it's sent off for repair. I was also told that a note had been made on my account of the problems I described, so it could be easily identified by the shop when they access my account. I went into my nearest T-Mobile store today and was told they could not accept my phone as I didn't get my upgrade from that store, or any other T-Mobile store. Despite telling the shop assistant I was clearly to drop it into by customer services, I was told to ring customer services again and ask for a bag to be sent out to me. I could then send the phone off for repair in that bag. To infuriate me even more, I was told that the store couldn't see any note which has been put on my account; not because one hadn't been left, but because they can no longer see the. I think the latter is totally rubbish, but I have no way of proving otherwise.

I called T-Mobile again and the chap I spoke to seemed adamant the store should have taken the handset. In the end I had to tell him the problems (again) and a bag is going to be sent out to be in....... wait for it....... 5-7 working days! So I have to wait up to a week, maybe longer, for a bag to be delivered; and then, and only then I can send my phone off for repair.

Sent the phone off Saturday morning and the phone was received by the repair centre this morning. It's current status is that it's waiting to be screened.

No idea how long it will remain at this status for.

Mine goes tomorrow! After a couple of months coping with the non pick up of my home wifi (work one fine!!) and crashing regularly at home, yesterday it would not go past the first HTC screen no matter what I did.
They said 7/10 days...........lets see:rolleyes:

My repair is complete and the phone is awaiting a final inspection. The repair took place yesterday according to the repair tracker on the T-Mobile website.

I now have a new IMEI number and the following is my repair summary:

- Screening
- Replacement - Speaker,KDIC,MPS111508BA
- Replacement - Main Board,TMEU,English-UK,GBR,HTC,Regional IDLow,Brown,w/ SIM Lock,BRAVO-O3
- Software update
- Adjustment

I assume the screening was to diagnose the problem.

A replacement speaker is self-explanatory, but I'm unsure what the problem with it was.
A replacement main board is a motherboard, I assume?

WOW........Sent Thursday, received back this morning, Monday:) If I new it would be that quick I'd sent it earlier.
Now I just have to reload everything, but wifi now works at home:):):)

Wow! That's impressive! Hope it's all ok now?

I've been told in another thread that T-Mobile would have needed to send my phone to HTC to do the work required. That could explain why mine has taken a little big longer.....

UPDATE! I have just called HTC. This is a software issue with the recent update. They are aware of this issue and are working on a fix. Its pointless returning the phone as there is nothing wrong with it. The replacement will be the same.

Hope this helps. Just a case of living with it for a few days.

Hi, that is exactly true because i had my first one for about 6 months and when i returned to HTC for overheating and rebooting itself they provide me with new one for reason that they could not fix it! Now i got another one for 7 months now and it started rebooting itself again :mad::mad:.

I have had the same problem with my HTC Desire for almost 6 months... i believe it was the mobile network because i noticed that it sucks up alot of battery so i started turning it off when i wasnt using it and also noticed that the turning on and off stopped. curious i switched it back on again and after about 10 minutes of roaming it started rebooting. havent had time to take it in but now it has gotten so bad that when i turn the mobile network on it restarts itself over and over and freezes on the screen just before the phones lock screen. arghh!

This will be my THIRD, yes THIRD HTC Desire. I have filed a warranty claim on the other TWO because of the freeze and restarting randomly problem! I cannot wait until my contract is up with Cellular South and I am dumping this phone! Does anyone know how to fix it?

After the second failure I would have demanded the contract of sale be nullified as clearly not fit for purpose and demanded they provide you with a different but equivalent handset.

This is your statutory right under British law!

In reference to the above, I am now tempted to send mine off for repair. Before I root it :D

T-Mobile have said they will compensate me for however long I don't have the phone, or I can take it into a store and they will provide a basic loan phone for the duration, and if they don't have one I can buy "a cheap

Hmm very odd, did a google search and i've been brought here. My dads Desire has started doing this according to him. He puts it for charge every night (don't ask, he barely uses the phone yet leaves it plugged in all night everday) anyway he's said for the past two days, when he's gone to get the phone in the morning its been off and he's had to turn it on, could this be down to the charging thing?

I just had a look at it was asking for the time/date settings to be adjusted and he had no signal either. Upgrade is due in two months anyway so i don't think he's that bothered but it does seem that the Desire is known for faults. This has been the first so far on his one.

I've finally found a fix for this. The restarting problem of my Desire S was because of bad battery contact with the phone. The problem started after using the phone for about a month, so the contact is probably worsening with time. That also explains why replacing motherboard fixes the issue for some time (I guess the contacts are attached to the mtb).

So I've put one piece of paper between the battery and the phone (under the battery) and another one between the end of the battery and the plastic piece that forces the battery against the contacts.

I had to figure out how much of paper to use. With no paper, the phone restarted 10x daily at least. After using some paper it went down to about 2. And now, it hasn't restarted for over a week.

Hope this helps! ;)

I have had my Desire Z for 3 months then all of a sudden on Sunday it rebooted. I just thought it was a one off but then at 4am this morning it rebooted again. (made me popular with the wife).

In both cases the phone was not being used, I can't believe it's over heating as again in both cases they have been left on a table or something doing nothing.

Wondering if I should contact o2/carephone warehouse/HTC or just see how it goes.

It's possible.

Does the phone switch itself off randomly, particularly when they phone is being used rather frequently or heavily?

I've recently had the same problem with my Desire. It has been randomly re-starting itself when I'm using it. It's been happening for a while now, but it recently got to the point where I could not get it to turn back on. I tried doing a factory reset/clear all data on the phone first, with no success. It was just frozen on the white HTC screen.

I first contacted Orange, as I purchased the phone through them, but they were no help. I then contacted HTC and they couldn't have been more helpful. My phone is just over a year old now, but they were happy to repair it free of charge. They picked it up and it was back to me and in perfect working order 3 days later. It seems to be a problem with the motherboard, which they replaced for me. My advice would be to contact HTC directly and explain the problem. If your phone was purchased after January 2010, then it will be under a 2 year warranty, as I recently found out.

If your phone is still able to switch on at this stage, I would advise to back up any data you don't want to lose. Everything saved to the SD card or sim will be fine, but you will lose any data saved to the phone itself.

Hope this helps and hope you get it sorted :)

I've been having a similar problem with my HTC desire s. It's under a month old, and initially the only problem I had was that Twitter occasionally crashed and HTC did a force close on it. this was a minor issue which I thought nothing of but recently my phone seems to be increasingly having problems.

whilst I was out the phone turned itself off and wouldn't switch back on until I plugged it in, when it came on with a white reboot screen. after I finally got it to reboot it seemed fine and again I wrote it off as a one off.

a week ago though my phone crashed and turned itself off and again I had to connect it to power to get it to turn back on. after which it happened again 10 minutes later!

I was using the phone a few days ago and again it crashed, but this time wouldn't turn on again. I had to take the battery out before it restarted again. this has happened now at least 3 times a day and this morning 20 times until I took my SD card out at the suggestion of my boyfriend when it finally started working again. I braved putting the SD card back in a few minutes ago and fingers crossed it's been ok since.

at first the issue seemed to mainly related to Twitter, but again when I was playing a game it happened, and the most recent succession of freezing and powering off seem to be related to updating applications. It got to an Amazon update before crashing.

I called o2 who just told me to update the phone, but it is up to date. This is so frustrating since I really like the phone and it's so new!

You can get through to HTC customer service on this number: 01279 206906.
This is an alternative to the 0845 890 0079 number on the HTC website, but it will take you through to the same place without the higher call rate.

I have read all NINE pages of posts hoping to find the solution there to the same problems you are all having, and thank you to Chrispie33 who posted a video on page one in August 2010 of the phone doing exactly what mine does! Except that mine does not even restart.

I called Customer Care, who advised a factory reset and told me how to export my contacts to the SD card. I downloaded an SMSbackup and restore from market which is the only thing that actually works on the phone. I did factory reset. The phone now thinks it is 2am on 6 January 1980. When I imported the contacts off the SD card, I was given a list of names, EVERY number has gone.

I emailed them, I was advised to factory reset again.
Or contact the repairs team. I'm not interested in contacting the repairs team. Clearly, if they could repair this problem, the customer service team would direct you straight to a person who knows how to repair it.
Also, there was a wonderful expose on television all about people who had sent their phones into HTC repairs. You might still find it on Iplayer, I think it was a BBC thing. In most cases, the phone had come back in a worse condition, or not come back at all. In one case, a chap who had been promised a new handset was given his back as new!

I finally got the number for the head office in SLOUGH and spoke to a very nice receptionist who I feel terribly sorry for being dumped with my problem. I want the person who should take responsibility for this problem to stand up, agknowledge that the pones have a problem and recall all faulty sets.
I do not want to hand out this number as I do not feel it is right to inundate the receptionist. However, if I do find the person in HTC big enough to do something, I'll be sure to pass on the details.

If you have an iphone with a fault, they replace it WITHOUT QUESTION.
That is why iphone will always be the main competition.

Anybody had any positive responce from HTC?

This is to follow up on my previous post for the next people who find themselves here in frustration.
My HTC handset was collected 03/11/2011. I was told it would take 5-7 days. The HTC terms and conditions state:
1. Estimated turnover period We estimate that we will normally be able to complete orders and return the units to most mainland addresses in the UK within 5 working days from receipt of the unit. Where the repair requires parts to be specially ordered or delivery to remote areas of the UK, or to other countries, this may take longer. HTC EU will endeavour to complete all orders within 5 working days from clearance of payment or warranty authorisation.

Today I telephoned customer care 01279206906 to find out what was the status. The consultant on the phone said that my phone was returned to me on that date. Hmmmm

I have received MANY phonecalls from HTC consultants in the past week. One of them, Simon, assures me he is a super duper Care Team Manager and that when I ring the above number, I am only to speak to him, that he will handle this personally (and doesn't that make me feel special). The chap i spoke to today had to ask who Simon was THREE times. Fantastic.

Another Customer Care manager who offered to handle my case personally was Aaron, but he just patronised me and tried to imply that I had caused the damage to my phone.

I have just tried to track my phone repair online with their friendly online 'track you repair' site, and the search doesn't recognise the ticket number they gave me.

So, I cannot track my phone. Nobody at Customer Care knows what is going on and I have no phone. If anybody who is thinking about buying HTC is reading this: DON'T.
