Help HTC desire - device not recognized

I'M GOING MENTAL! Basically I can't sync or use my phone as storage - my computer doesn't recognize my phone as a device. I HAVE emailed and worked with HTC support staff via email to resolve this problem but nothing absolutely NOTHING has worked. To make me feel "better" my uncles original desire immediately worked on the same computer using the same wire and the same software. I've googled and googled and unless anyone has some weird and unorthodox method to help me I should send my one week old phone back to boot camp for renewal? any help would be much appreciated.

It never has once been recognized so I had to download it from the internet and install it with the internet and anti virus disabled. I have plugged it in the back of the computer for the main usb ports and tried it on my uncles laptop also. I have manually deleted the htc sync files through device manager and reinstalled it four times on my computer and twice on the laptop. I have selected usb debugging and tried connecting using it as a disk drive and via htc sync - neither worked. I've reset it, taken the battery out and used a different sd card - not worked either. It can't be the cable because my uncles phone, the old model, works perfectly fine without any hiccups. very frustrating :(

I'd just bring it straight back to the shop for an exchange.... sounds faulty for some reason or other and you shouldn't have to sort it out the whys and hows. You bought a product, it doesn't work as it should ... simples.
