Root HTC Desire hboot update required

Breny

Lurker
Hey guys.
I own HTC Desire and I want to upgrade Android from 2.2 to 2.3.
From the site htcdev.com i figured out i will need to unlock my bootloader first, so I tried to proceed with guide for it there. However, I found out that in order to use fastboot oem get_token_identifier, that is required in that quide, you need hboot v2 and I have hboot 0.93 on my HTC desire.
Is it possible to upgrade hboot and if so, where should i look for guides? I spent a lot of time searching google, but results for "HTC desire hboot update 2" are really confusing for me and I cant find anything usefull.
Can anyone point me to right direction to update hboot so I can proceed with guide form htcdev?
Thanks.

Why don't you root your phone??? This way, you can get even ICS Rom, unless you're "official-thing-freak" :D The official GB ain't supposed to be used easily and conveniently. Why not go for the Oxygen, CM or MIUI???

I completely agree. Rooting will give you far more options than unlocking the bootloader. In any case once the bootloader is unlocked it will restrict your options if you don't relock it.

Go to the "All things Root" sub forum & read the FAQs & guides there. There are two option for rooting. Unrevoked is the simplest but Revolutionary will give you more options. Don't worry though, if you use Unrevoked you can always run Revolutionary afterwards to gain S-OFF.

Once you've read the FAQs & guides please come back & ask if you're unsure of anything.

If you don't want to root but just update to 2.3 you do not need to update the bootloader first. Just download the update from shipped-ROMs, unzip, and use the RUU .exe in there to perform the update (there may be instructions, but it's essentially just connect the phone to a PC via USB and run the .exe on the PC). It will factory reset the phone, so back up anything important first.

As others have said, you actually have more options if you root and use a custom ROM. But it's your choice.

One thing you should not do is use the HTCDev procedure: that's for rooting, not updating to 2.3, but is inferior to the rooting tools described in the guides in this forum. Indeed it might well actually stop you from applying the official 2.3 update, as the HTCDev thing loads a higher bootloader version than that ROM comes with.
