Root HTC Desire HELP!

Damn, I was hoping that the CID check might not happen with the PB99IMG.

What does it say at the top of the white screen with the little androids?

OK, so the alpharev hboot has been replaced by a HTC CDMA hboot. That's one good thing. If the worst comes to the worst and you have to send it in for repair, at least the bootloader is correct.

The funny thing is that that implies that the RUU did run at least part of the way once, so why did it apparently not complete at least that time?

I don't think this is going to work, but there's not much to lose by trying. Could you remove your SD card, and then boot back to the bootloader screen and select the "clear storage" option? I reckon that should do a factory reset (removing the card was just to make sure it couldn't do anything to the card). You never know, if the RUU has replaced the ROM as well as the hboot it just might be all that's needed. The RUU should do a factory reset anyway, but that's why there's nothing to lose by trying this.

Otherwise it's a matter of trying to get a working goldcard - that seems to be the problem. The trouble with goldcards is the only way of testing them is to run an RUU and see whether they work.

To be honest, i'm not sure what this means or how it could help lol.
I've got to go now ('tis midnight here), but I think I might have an idea how that could help. But there is a catch - see the last paragraph.

I googled "utstarcom desire ruu" and came up with this thread: http://androidforums.com/htc-desire/478958-htc-expands-bootloader-unlocking-desire-official.html. Post 9 is particularly interesting. What Rastaman is saying there is that the "Desire bootloader unlock" section of the htcdev website is a source for Desire RUUs. Not only do I see "UTStarcom" listed in that table, but I also see NTelos.

You don't actually want to go through the bootloader unlocking process! However, one of the "preparatory" stages is to update your phone's software to "the latest version". So follow the link at the top of the thread, register and log in, then click that you accept all of the disclaimers. You will then get to a page with a list of different network variants for which you can download a RUU. NTelos is on the list, so that implies that there's an RUU there which will run on your phone even without a goldcard.

Before you use this though, a caution: from the filename I think that RUU will update your bootloader to 1.09. The problem with that is that you say you do want to root in future, and that bootloader version isn't supported by any of the rooting tools. So while there's a good chance that this RUU would run, you may well not be able to root afterwards. So I'd be tempted to download it so that you have it, but to hold fire and see whether you can find something else first that won't close off the option of rooting.

Yeah... Unfortunately that did nothing... Now what?

Now a working goldcard (use a different microSD?) or a different RUU.

As noted above, I can see where you can get an ntelos ruu, but I don't think you'll be able to root later if you use it.

Ok, well it's good to know that I have another option. However, can't I just downgrade the bootloader? (I realize this would require a goldcard, but at least my phone would be working...)

Well I decided that even If I couldnt root my phone, I would be happy just to have control of it again.. So I followed the steps you advised. It got stuck on %83 which was "Flushing bootloader". It stayed like that for an hour, until I unhooked it. I then attempted to use the recovery method it has, but that didnt work either.. My phone now says this on the menu with the three android figures:

Bootloader is there. Try again. If fails, perhaps you are still in warranty.and can send it to HTC / ntelos for repair

Yeah, that's what I was going to suggest.

I guess "locked" is because this is the unlockable bootloader and you haven't unlocked it, ie. nothing to worry about.

Yeah, I tried and it didn't work. I've just about gone crazy trying to get it to work. I suppose it's time for my last resort. I'll send it off to get it repaired. I should still be able to root it once it comes back though, right?

Dont see any reason why not, providing you follow our guides and dont do anything GSM only

Ok, well I ended up with a brand new HTC Desire. Would you please tell me EXACTLY what to do so that I do not screw this one up! I've tried reading some of your guides, but I just get confused! Help me one last time please?!

What exactly do you want? Root? You need the revolutionary thread. have a read and post questions about that guide there

It tells me I need to find out what my PVT version is.. What is that exactly and how do I find it?

Also, It tells me to see if my HBoot is PTV4. If my Hboot says: HBOOT-1.06.0000 Does this mean it is not PVT4?

That's a bit of GSM. Your "DVT" is the equivalent. However, I don't know about CDMA devices.

You could do the terminal emulator bit to find erase size - the PVT check is just to save most people from having to do that. Meanwhile I'll see if I can find out whether any of this is relevant to CDMA devices.

What it's about is that later revisions of the Desire came with a different memory setup, and the older recoveries didn't support this. So you needed to know your erase size.

OK, since that is all about the choice of recovery, how about the solution in post 201 of the guide thread: http://androidforums.com/desire-all...-windows-published-4th-november-2011-a-5.html

You could just use whatever recovery Revolutionary defaults to for CDMA then replace that with 4Ext after rooting, or you could download the Desire CDMA img from the first post of this XDA thread and then install that when you get to that part of the guide (there are direct download links for GSM and CDMA devices there). It's probably simpler to just install 4Ext from the start. This is the recovery that most of us here have moved to.

Edit: you don't need to worry about PVT/DVT or erase size if you use 4Ext.

When I run terminal emulator on my phone, and put in the script it tells me to, my phone says "Cat/proc/mtd: not found". What should I do about this?

If you follow my last post you don't need to worry :)

However, the answer is:

1) "cat" not "Cat"

2) space between "cat" and "/proc/mtd"

I should click the second link on that post, correct? And install 4EXTRecovery?

Wait, is this something I should download onto my computer or is it an app I should put on my phone via the Market?

The link labelled "Desire CDMA" in the sentence:

If you somehow lost those files, there's a direct download (Desire GSM), (Desire CDMA) for a version you can flash via fastboot.

That should give you a recovery image that you can install as described in the guide (i.e. fastboot flash).

You can install the recovery updater or recovery control app later, but you need to be rooted for that.
