Root HTC Desire HELP!

That link gives you an image that you download to your computer then fastboot flash once the phone is S-Off.

As I say, there is an app (actually 2 apps) which is linked earlier in the post, but you'll need to be rooted first to use that. That is the alternative - just accept revolutionary's recovery, root, then install the app and use that to replace the recovery. But I figure why not just install 4Ext from the start - it's much better than the recovery revolutionary will give you.

Ok, now that I have downloaded the img, what should I do now? Im not really sure what steps I covered in the guide just now. Where should I pick up at?

OK, what you did was download 4Ext recovery rather than CWM or Amon Ra, which was step 2e. You also avoided the need to do the PVT/erase size stuff, so that's step 2 complete.

You actually use that img in step 6 of the guide, after running revolutionary.

Great. So i'll pick up on step three. I'm sure i'll need your help again soon so keep an eye on this post for me please? Thanks! :D

Lmfao, well that didn't take long. On step three, is there really anything I need to do? Or is this just general information for me to use at my own disposal?

The SDK tools, yes. In fact you don't need ADB for this operation, just fastboot.

Note that I don't use Windows for managing my phone, so am not familiar with setting up fastboot on a PC (on Mac and Linux it's a separate download, so simpler to set up).

Ok, I am at the point where I am ready to go S-OFF. However, I can not seem to get revolutionary to load. I download it properly, then extract the files to a new folder and chose to run it. However, it just quickly opens up what looks like a command prompt box and then it closes it very quickly. I tried re-downloading it to no avail. What should I do?

Do I need my phone plugged in perhaps?

Did you install the HTC fastboot drivers (from the revolutionary documentation)?

May have to wait for someone who's knows Windows better to help, unless you can glean any information from the window while it briefly flashes up.

Yes, I downloaded the drivers. And I was able to (after many attempts) take a screen shot of the prompt while it was up. It appears to just be the basic starting stuff for the prompt. It merely says what it and and its version, along with who it is brought to you by. Nothing useful as to what may be causing it to close.. So I guess I have hit a dead end..

Well I doubt it will make a difference - I suspect that there is something in your PC's setup missing - but you could try connecting the phone then running it. Don't know whether it should be running android or in fastboot mode, as I rooted before revolutionary.

If nothing else works you could create a linux virtual machine and download the linux version. That's what I did for my test.

FML. All this linux stuff is way over my head..

Is there some way to find out if and what could be missing from my PC's setup?

I thought all linux was was a bunch of coding? Not anything user-friendly at all.
Linux is an OS, and Android is a linux derivative :)

If by user friendly you mean desktop GUI all Linux variants have that, and for how I work the multiple workspace setup is essential (I feel claustrophobic on the single Windows desktop). I personally use terminal commands for most things - more flexible and much faster than clicking through file managers imo - but if you insist on clicking pictures you can do it as well in Linux as anything.

I also use a Macbook, but under the graphics that is just another *nix variant, so I use it just as I do linux.

Yeah Linux, especially ubuntu I think is very user friendly. Pretty too once you get it how you like it. Much more flexible than windows.

Here's mine right now, although obviously this took some effort:

I actually have ubuntu on my computer as an alternate booting option. I didnt realise that it was a linux thing.. Hmm. Ok, back to the desire. What should I do now?
