HTC desire & home replacement apps

Ive browsed around a bit, and don't see where this particular topic has been discussed...
I have had my Desire for a couple of months now, and completely love it.
However, like any good android owner, I am now looking to see what else I can do with it, and have come across Home Replacement apps.
The Desire seems to have so many great features, and some of these apps appear to be trying to emulate them.
So i'm wondering -- are any of these home replacements comparable to the HTC Sense, or are they mostly to bring other androids up to par, or..?
Thanks for any input! :-)

they're called launchers mostly. Yeah a lot of them are really good like Launcher Pro Plus or ADW Ex (I think it's called) some offer a completely different look like Zune Home, depends what you like really.
Because I'm rooted and running Cyanogen, I don't have Sense (not that I liked it that much anyway) so I'm running the latest ADW and I have to say, it's brilliant! it has nifty animations for sliding from screen to screen and is so much more customisable than Sense.
I think things like Open Home were originally to bring other users a proper home experience, but now the developers are competing with the Android developers, so the products are just getting better :)
I highly suggest them. (You do lose HTC widgets, but that's not too bad, just get Beautiful)

I'm a Launcher Pro Plus fan. The removal of the big, ugly Sense launcher bar for the LP dock was a godsend as you can have up to 15 replacement buttons on the dock(make that 30 if you use the swipe gestures to launch apps.
It's got nice widgets to replace the majority of the sense widgets too.
If there's not a widget in LP+ for what you want by default then there will be an alternative in the market. Beautiful Widgets was all I needed.:D

Same here. The one reason I swapped Sense for lpro was the dock. Looks, number of icons and customization meant I could get a cleaner looking home screen.

OK, sounds like a number of users have swapped out for something else.. Any chance of a screen shot or two from anyone, to see how they look on the desire? :-D

Can't recommend Launcher Pro Plus any more. I used to think sense was good but the dock at the bottom of the screen is just horrible in my opinion. Try it for a week and you won't go back

If you're looking for a light-weight, free, customisable, stable launcher, then the best i've come across so far definitely has to be "Zeam".

There is no hype around the launcher, as the aim isn't to have every possible setting available, but it still manages to satisfy every need i have for a home setup.

Good luck!

Thanks to everyone who responded. I browsed around and read about various launchers and decided to give 'Go Launcher' a try. Now there is a whole new world of customization available! Gosh its no wonder my battery doesn't last, with all the playing around!
One of the things GoLaucher will do, is let me chose an icon from a list of supplied ones. I don't much care for any of them - can I download others that I like better? I came across this in another thread: Royalty Free Icons & Clipart Stock Images ~ Icons Etc. - will these work - I'm not rooted...

I answered my own question, and thought I'd share the results, in case anyone else wondered...

I downloaded some icons from the net to my pc, plugged in my phone, and copied the icons over into the backgrounds folder.
Now I am able to use them the same way you can use a picture or other image as an icon - similar to what Desktop Visualizer does, from what i can tell.
I dont know much about the file structure of the phone however. Can I just make a new folder, for icons? Will the system 'see' the folder and its contents?

Yeah, i've been using Launcher Pro for quite a while now, but the bug where everything drops and the dock is half below the screen (when notification bar is removed) is bugging the hell outta me. Been like it for ages without update. After my success with Go SMS, i'm swapping to Go Launcher too. Same as LP, without the widgets, which i don't use anyway.

just got go Launcher, only down sideit saves to Internal Memory, but will mess around, if anyone as any links for icons or for it will be very happy an much obliged
