Help HTC Desire - Lost phone radio

Hello all,
My one month old Orange UK-Branded HTC Desire on 2.2 lost all 'phone' connectivity on the weekend. I tried taking battery out, full reset etc but wouldn't register on network. (Tried the sim on my old phone and it works OK, unfortunately didn't have another Orange SIM to test on the Desire)
All other functions, including WIFI and gps work OK.
Anyway Orange are sending me a new phone out today but I wondered if this is a common issue as I have not found much on the net.

Just received the new phone from Orange, but still no reception...
How can the SIM work in another phone (SE K810), it doesn't look damaged at all.
 
Maybe you have a local cell problem, have you tried it anywhere else?

The Desire's phone reception is woefully poor compared to my old Nokia, if I take the SIM out of my Desire, (which varies between two bars and no signal and regulary drops calls at home) and put it in my old Nokia E51 I get full signal and perfect reception.

If Orange have a cell problem in your area it may have just pushed the Desire out of range, but there's still enough signal for your old phone.
 
It is the SIM.
I remembered that I had an old, inactive Orange SIM knocking around and popped this in. Although it wouldn't register on the network, it does search and find networks.
Have now asked Orange to activate this one, apparently takes 2 hours.
 
Just to close this off, the phone is now fully working on my re-activated 4 year old SIM that I had in the k810. Really strange as Orange wanted to send me another phone as they didn't think the SIM would work in any phone if it was faulty.
 
Can I just check whether you can use the same phone number on a new SIM card? I have been having problems with my Desire losing phone connectivity, particularly after coming out of Airplane mode and I'm wondering if it might be a problem with the SIM. I really don't want to change phone numbers though. I am with Virgin in the UK.

Yes, when you get a new SIM, you call the network up quoting the SIM number and they then activate it with your current phone number.
This takes a little while but is obvious as your old SIM will no longer make calls.
(I wish I knew yesterday that they could also do this with old, inactive SIMs, it would have saved me a lot of hassle!)
