Root HTC Desire rooting problem. Help!

Danksss

Lurker
Hello,

I finally decided to bite the bullet today and root my phone. The main reason is because its a orange branded phone and I want to get rid of all those horrible apps they pre-install for you.

I have been following this guide on your forums:

http://androidforums.com/desire-all...ff-root-htc-desire-revolutionary-updated.html

I created a gold card before I did anything else

I used the revolutionary method. I was lazy and let their program do everything e.g. install the default recovery file it supplies.

Everything seemed fine. I managed to get S-OFF and install zip file from SD. Superuser zip file seem to install with no errors. However when I check to see if my phone is rooted it says it is not and has no superuser app.

I checked to see if my phone was rooted with root checker and titanium backup.

My HTC Desire info is below:

Model Number:
HTC Desire A8181

Android version:

2.2

Baseband version
32.48.00.32U_5.10.05.30
Kernel Version
2.6.32.15-g29e526b
htc-kernel@and18-2 #1
Build No.
2.17.61.3 CL274424 release-keys
Software Number
2.17.61.3
Browser version
WebKit 3.1

Here is a image of my Hboot. You can see that S-OFF successfully.

Any help would be appreciated

The pictures aren't working for me. What happened when you tried to run Titanium?

You could try flashing the root patch again. I'd take a backup from recovery first. When you flashed that file, were there any messages from the recovery?

The important thing is that with S-Off & a custom recovery you will be able to root it. If the root patch won't work you can just flash a rooted ROM. But it would be better to get the current ROM rooted so you can take a Titanium backup before that (though Titanium Pro has features which might help if not).

Hi Hadron

Thanks for the reply.

Does this link work?

Basically it says:
-Revolutionary-
BRAVO PVT4 SHIP S-OFF
HBOOT-6.93.1002
MICROP-051d
TUCH PANEL-SYNW0101
RADIO-5.10.05.30
Aug 10 2010.17:52:18

(Then the boot options, Fastboot, Recovery, Clear Storage, Simlock)

I've made a Backup i.e. Nandroid as far as I'm aware in backup & restore.

Here are pictures of what titanium backup says:

http://i1307.photobucket.com/albums/s594/tadanks/IMG_1684_zps58b0b811.jpg
If that doesn't show it basically says:
"sorry, I could not acquire root privileges. This application will *not* work!. Please verify that your ROM is rooted"

Root checker app also says this phone is not rooted when i run a test.

I tried re-installing the root file and it ran fine again, no errors. Heres is a picture:

If you can't view that it says:
finding update
opening update
Installing update
##############
Superuser 3.0.7 for Android 2.0-3.2
##############
Mounting system
Deleting system:bin/su...
Deleting system:xbin/su...
Extracting files to system...
selecting system:bin/su permissions to 06755
Creating system:xbin/su symbolic link..
unmounting system..

Install complete. Enjoy!

Install from sdcard complete.

I've backed up all the important stuff on my phone through apps and good old excel e.g. msgs, contacts and photos/files i've accumulated. So if I lose data it will only cost me time and I won't lose anything important.

What do you recommend? I agree I would like to root this current ROM if possible first before I start choosing a custom one.

Any further help would be great!!

I can see the images fine now, thanks.

Hmm, odd one. It looks like it's flashed ok, but seems not to be working. So what are the options?

You could try installing superuser from the Play Store. If the superuser app is the only thing that failed this should work, but I suspect that nothing was flashed, in which case this won't be enough. Should do no harm to try though.

You could try a different recovery, as described in the guide (set up fastboot on your computer, download a recovery img and fastboot flash it), then try flashing with the new recovery.

If that doesn't work, you may be able to flash a rooted stock Froyo ROM without doing a wipe - there's a good chance it will be sufficiently compatible (though not certain with an Orange ROM).

Thanks for the reply.

Just a quick update for now as I am off to bed.
Downloaded superuser and you're right doesn't work, no apps listed and when i try superuser updater fix it pauses when it tries to get root access and they says i should flash with a zip from androidsu.com

I will try the other two methods tomorrow after work. Setting up fastboot on my computer looked a bit complex when I initially had a go. I'll give it a bash though and let you know how I get on.

A quick update. I tried installing the superuser zip again in Recovery for the hell of it, now it spits out:

Revolutionary CWM v4.0.1.4
--Installing: /sdcard/update.zip
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
E:Can't open /sdcard/update.zip
(No such file or directory)
Installation aborted

The only change I have made that I'm aware of is installing the superuser app on my phone. Is this why it now gives this error or is this error now shedding some light on what might be wrong when I try and root my phone?

When I return home from work I will try the fastboot method of loading another recovery and let you know how I get on.

You could uninstall the superuser app first. But I don't think that message is related.

BUT what that message says is it's looking for a file called "update.zip", not whatever the actual file name is. So either rename the root file to update.zip, or (better) select the other update option that lets you choose the file you wish to flash.

Thanks Hadron for the reply I appreciate it. I'm doing late shifts so haven't found the time to try your solutions. As soon as I do i will give an update. Fingers crossed it works
